The book you always meant to read but never got round to

There has to be one - maybe several! I always meant to get to grips with James Joyce's Ulysses but have never done so, and then there's War and Peace! Although I like to think that I'm quite well read there are some massive gaps in my coverage, which I'm somewhat ashamed about. How about you? What is the classic novel that has always escaped you but one day ... one day ... you'll finally conquer?

The Great Railway Bazaar by Paul Theroux. Amazon offers a pretty good deal for that book, I probably should get it soon.

Your mum was probably right - but 12 is a curious age, so it's hardly surprising that you were attracted. By the way, your response was duplicated so I've deleted the other one.

I am a self proclaimed book junkie. I love to read! I also have a lot of books that are in my personal library but I am always getting new books from the library, its like candy. You just can't stop at one! I have a number of books that I mean to read, well someday when I have more time maybe or have exhausted the library from books I want to read. It is a good thing I don't like buying books very often or my library would be much larger!

As a professional librarian of 40 years standing, I have to approve of your library habit!

It would have to be "Catcher in the Rye" by J D Salinger. I know I should read it, but I don't feel inclined to do so. My husband thinks it's a great book and he has excellent taste and still... I don't know why I just cannot make myself interested in reading it. But I suppose I should. Right?

Yup - That's also on my list. It's not a long book, it's on many school reading lists, so there's absolutely no excuse!

Funny you should mention War and Peace. I got maybe 1/3 of the way into it, and just couldn't slog through the battlefield scenes. The book mark is still sitting in it waiting for me.

I really don't like classic books. I tried to read Charles Dickens last year as my project and failed terribly. My only problem is lack of time, I usually read whatever strikes my fancy and am content with that.

@NeldaHoxie Many people fall foul of CD, although he is a favourite of mine (I once did a project for the Dickens Fellowship that involved me in reading 6000 pages about him!)

I am a big fan of books specially the Wheel of time series and Sword of Truth. I also like the books of Dan Brown. I am planning to read the Lord of the rings and the A song of fire and ice series in a PDF file format. If I enjoyed these, I will definitely purchase a book as a remembrance.

I have just finished a book about Ohio in the 1850s and the response of Quakers to the slave laws. That has left me wanting to read Uncle Tom's Cabin.

I used to think in the same way but have overcome this. The main reason is that the classics are all so long. I decided some years ago not to read any more books longer than 400 pages. No book becomes better if it's longer. It always means unnecessary padding. The pace of the 18th and 19th century is too slow for me.
