How Do You Eat Watermelon?

When I was a kid and having a sleep over with my gal pal, I remember being so surprised to see her parents cut open a watermelon to eat and they actually put salt onto it before they ate it. I told my Mother how odd that was and she said, "oh, some people do that because they think it brings out the flavor of the melon". I never tried it that way. After I married, I told my husband about this and how I still think it is an odd thing to do and he said the same thing as my Mom. He even bought a watermelon and tried it with salt and he said it tasted good. So, how do you eat watermelon, with or without salt?

I don't eat watermelon at all. I prefer honeydew melons. I've heard that Sicilians eat strawberries with pepper.

Strawberries with pepper are very nice - as is orange marmalade with a nice mature cheddar in a toasted sandwich!

@pgntwo I never thought about putting marmalade together with cheese, but that does sound good to try in a sandwich sometime.

I love a ripe watermelon. First off you have to know the right thump and then you cut into it. I eat mine out doors so you can just eat it and let the juice get all over. An apron on the front of you is very helpful. Now mind you I don't care for the honeydew melon, it has a weird flavor. No, I love cantaloupe and watermelon. No salt either for that ruins the pure flavor. Just pure flavor by itself is delicious if its ripe.

I do like it pure by itself and perfectly ripe.

To each their own I guess. I like my watermelon scooped out into balls. The leftover is then made into a juice. The balls are then added. Its a yummy treat.

just try out the watermelons by sprinkling rocksalt not the tablesalt.tablesalt is chemically processed.rocksalt is natural salt and the taste will be amazing.

Definitely without, although I rarely bother to buy them. I do enjoy watermelon, but they are so messy to eat at times. It is easy enough if I buy a fruit salad containing melon or try a few slices in a café or restaurant, but preparing a watermelon in that way would not seem worth the effort.

I love watermelon juice or shake. I haven't tried it with salt. Maybe I should next time.

With salt!! I gotta have salt on it or I wont eat it. But I eat salt on my oranges and apples too. I simply like salt. But salt on watermelon just seems to enhance the sweetness for me.

I grew up with a southern father who cut his watermellon and put salt on it. When I used to eat it I did the same thing. I don't bother with it now- you only rent that stuff.

if'n its truly ripe, there's no need fer salt. when i used to grow my own, i ne'er salted - but gettin' one from the store 'r roadside stand, i fear such is nearly a requirement.

I like watermelon in sunny days. I never prefer salt but I apply salt only if I have cold or fever. Putting salt decreases its taste which I don't like. You just made me want to taste yummy watermelons again

That is a new one on me. I never had watermelon with salt on it before. I used to love it freshly cut. And if they were sweet, wow, they were good. But I haven't had watermelon in a long time now. Ever since I was diagnosed with diabetes. And since I don't take any medication, I was told by my endo to stay away from all sugars.

Salt-free would be best for me.
