A day without laughter is a day wasted

So said Charlie Chaplin and I'm sure he was right. The Brummie comedian Jasper Carrott once said that laughter had to be the best medicine, unless you had Type 1 diabetes in which case insulin came quite high up the list! So what has made you laugh today? For me, it was reading in the Times today about an incident in the life of Denis Healey, the former Labour politician who has just died at the age of 98. He was apparently a bit of a bully in his heyday and had the unfortunate tendency of falling out with people. He once managed to offend his speechwriter, just before he was due to give an important speech. The speech was delivered only just in time, and Healey had no time to run through it before he had to stand on the platform and deliver it. He was going quite nicely until he turned over at page 4 to find all the other sheets blank, with just the note: "Your're on your own now, pal".

Charlie Chaplin may have considered laughter to be a great thing, but he never did anything to promote laughter in my opinion

What amuses people in 2015 is not the same as what did the trick in 1915 - slapstick and pathos are very "old hat" to a modern audience.

@indexer I am a fan of good slapstick and always enjoyed Buster Keaton, Harol Lloyd, The Keystone Cops etcetera, but Charlie Chaplin never appealed to me in the slightest.

Laughter is something that can help you to pass through difficult times I enjoy watching fail videos on tv, when I feel a little down.

That's funny, and anyway I've always thought it was cheating to get someone else to write your speeches. I do humorous poems sometimes and it gives me great pleasure if I can make someone smile.
