Sad news fell on my ears this morning . . . my bowling partner has developed gangrene in his foot and they will have to amputate it later today. I am feeling so sad for him . . . This man is a Gold medalist in the sport of Lawn Bowling and now this has to befall him. a chain of prayers would be appreciated Life has some horrid curve balls . . . .

that is pretty terrible, I hope he heals ok, and is able to mentally handle the loss.

@Inlemay some people would be more upset than others on that one, I honestly don't know how I would deal, to me a foot would be easier than a hand.

That is my biggest fear - the mental ability to handle the situation and loss

OH good God above how terrible for him. I hate seeing people with this! There was a time when you could walk onto a ward and instantly know someone had gangrene!

Gangrene is quite rare these days, but still one of the most serious and hideous conditios to acquire.

A problem with sugar levels is a factor and it seems he has been having problems for a while, but did not consult the doctor

Oh that is sad news. I hope that, as terrible as the operation is, it is also successful at stopping the gangrene and that the rest of his health will improve greatly.

They are hoping to save his life - they eventually amputated above the knee

If they don't remove the gangrene he will die so it is better than they do.

Life can be a pig at times, and Gangrene is one of those real pigs, they don't seem to be able to overcome, other than removal...wish him luck and a speedy recovery..

If he is a champion sports person he will have the strength of mind to overcome this and find other ways to enjoy his life.

@Inlemay well, odd bowlers are probably no worse than those less odd

@valmnz I should have probably said that differently - odd selection of words

The only problem he has no family, so no support system - only an odd bowler here and there.

I am so sorry Lany, that is a terrible news. I suppose there is nothing they can do, but to amputate. I hope he can heal well, all the best to him.

As far as I know gangrene is usually caused by the failure of blood to carry oxygen to a certain part of the body, which results in that section of the body beginning to decay.

I was telling @asylum that he was having sugar problems as well - but he is not seriously overweight or anything, He says he pumped his leg a while ago

Oh poor man, how awful! I hope that, in time, he will still be able to get out and enjoy life, just in a different way.
