Oh, you naughty computer

Sick computer

As if technology has not caused me enough hassle lately, my computer is now playing up. I rebooted the system earlier and it failed to boot up several times then booted into recovery mode. Trying to run System Restore from there also had issues and I ended up in the same situation several times before I finally managed to load Windows. It is running fine at the moment, but is clearly unstable and may have further boot issues, so the only practical approach is to reformat the drive and reinstall everything. This is a laborious task and will take quite a while, although at least I have my laptop to use during the process. I have backed up all documents and files that I need and may reformat tomorrow. Meanwhile I will carry on unless the system has further issues. Computers are a wonderful invention, but they do have a cruel sense of humour.

That's a great illustration for this. I'm afraid if anything goes wrong with my computer I have to call for help, as I haven't got a clue.

Having thye ability to deal with my own problems on the computer, whether hardware or software, is something that I am grateful for. Quite a lot of friends and work colleagues have brought their computer to me over the years rather than send then away for repair.

@Asylum You must be a very useful friend to have. I'm lucky in that a friend of my son's is a whizz kid too, and he's always willing to help me.

@jaboUK I have always been happy to help people in this way because I hate the idea of them being charged extortionate prices for simple jobs by computer repair companies.

Computers can be really annoying, sometimes the only thing to do is to format and reinstall. Good luck.

It is a situation that I did not want to be in either. As it is the computer seems fine as long as I do not turn it off, so I may wait a while yet, but I will need to deal with this soon.

I recently got tricked by a strange bias that for some reason flips over to the wrong setting giving all kinds of horrid boot issues. Default setting don't restore it in there I've had to get the proper setting and manual change it. I found this out after I used format. But at another time after an update found something was wrong that uninstalling and restoring just wouldn't look after so like you thought it was the way to go. Besides I get too many things I don't need and a fresh start sometimes helps.

If the BIOS cannot remember where the boot folder is then you certainly have a problem trying to boot up. Was this a simply glitch or is the battery in the motherboard running low?

@Bluedoll I do not think that the battery would be rechargeable, they tend to be Lithium cells. In reality a CMOS battery should outlast the motherboard, but I have known some to become flat. A good indication of a failing motherboard battery is usually the date changing as the BIOS is unable to keep time without the power supply.

@Asylum I've been wondering that myself. It could be done, the battery, do those things recharge I wonder? It might be worth changing but for now, now that I know the error message, am ready for it.

oh how I know that - crashing computers, loosing work, loosing documents, loosing photos - we have a full back-up hard-drive with another full back-up Laptop as well - do you think we are paranoid ???

Being paranoid is unavoidable if you use a computer. I have never lost any files by computer problems because even if the computer had not been able to boot then I would have used a Linux Boot Disk to access and copy the files off the drive.

Computers do have a tendency now and then to act up and mine started acting up on Tuesday late afternoon. I took out my battery to see if there was any dust or anything like that in there on this laptop but I found nothing then yesterday Wednesday when I came home and turned it on there was no problem. Today it hasn't been acting up at all either so I have no idea what was wrong with it.

Intermittent problems can be really annoying because they tend to act up when you are busy, then when you have the time to deal with it they run fine and you cannot find the problem.

You must be having some virus hidden somewhere. If you remember when it was that you downloaded anything from the Net,, then you can restore before that date. I am no techie but it is my techie's advice.

I tried system restore a few times during the period that it was not booting, but most restore points were not finalising. It is currently running, but may have trouble the next time I reboot, so I will totally reformat and start from scratch at some time later today.

Well, at least you sound as if you know what you're doing! We used to call our son over, but he lives over two hours away now.

Many people tend to know someone who can deal with a computer related issue for them. In my case it is me who often ends up with someone else's computer in my house to be sorted out.

@valmnz I expect that he ends up as I sometimes do, with a few computers in the house belonging to other people.

Everyone knows that computers are female. Make one little mistake and they constantly keep reminding you.

@Asylum No, they are men, they talk a good game, but shut down frequently.
