Annoying People Sitting Next To Me

I did some errands in Hyde, Manchester today, after another frustrating job interview. It was a warm sunny afternoon, so I sat on a vacant bench in the Town Hall Square. I ate my sandwiches and I’d just taken a book out to read when an old lady asked if she could sit down there too. I was happy for her to do so, but had I seen five minutes into the future I might have been less inclined to welcome her. She fidgeted like crazy and eventually decided to get a cup of tea from a nearby vendor. She asked me to guard her shopping, which I was happy to do, though as puzzled as ever when someone trusts a complete stranger to stop complete strangers stealing all their things. She returned with her coffee and asked me where I’d got my food. I pointed to the shop across the square. She decided she would get herself one and asked me again to watch her bags. I realized I’d be there all day as she carried on buying more stuff if I let her so I told her I was going soon. She decided she didn’t want a sandwich anyway, but then she dropped her coffee in its plastic cup, spilling lukewarm coffee over herself and partly over me too. I finished my food and moved away as quickly as I could. I so wish I’d been able to keep the bench to myself. Arthur Chappell

You were having a peaceful moment with your food and she had to ruin everything.

It could have been worse Arthur, but fortunately for you I was delayed and you had left before I arrived there.

@arthurchappell That is no problem, everyone else does exactly the same so I am used to it now.

You must look very trustworthy. I suppose you appeared to be someone eating his lunch, and unlikely to drop it in favor of absconding with her bags.

Nice that she trusted me but it moved from seeing a nice moment of freely giving assistance to her assuming I'd be there to assist her while she did more while she had her hands free - I'd have ended up helping her all afternoon. When she spilt coffee on me too my patience wore out.

You feel so awjword when somebody sits beside you and you are busy with your cell or eating something.

I draw the line at watching strangers' stuff. I usually enjoy talking to strangers for a few minutes though.

I would find that annoying too. I don't mind a bit of conversation but to be left to watch the bags, I don't think so. You have a big heart, and I understand why you wanted to leave.

I am also wondering about those who trust all of their belongings to strangers. I think that lady wanted some company and she was probably trying to start conversation with someone. Or she just wanted someone to watch her bags.

It is odd to ask a stranger to keep other strangers away from their things.
