Paying A Lot For Meals Made Of Cheap Ingredients

Some bars and restaurants charge customers a lot for a bowl or plate of Nachos. This meal involves tipping a bag of potato or tortilla chipped-crisps out of a bag and slopping on some guacamole and salsa sauce, with a few added jalapenos. Customers are then overcharged considerably for it. What next? Charge customers a fortune for a Pot Noodle? It’s hardly Masterchef. Arthur Chappell

it's amazing what people will pay for. I hate paying for drinks, think about the mark up! I generally just get some water.

I agree. But as our son works in the hospitality industry he sees it differently - you're paying for all those hidden extras that you don't have to pay for at home.

I appreciate them being a bit more expensive than buying the items to make your own as the bars and restaurants need to profit but the mark up can be extremely high and excessive

This is one of the reason why I do not like to eat out, you pay a lot for cheap (junk) food.

Nachos are pretty expensive in all restaurants, and I know of one which classes it as a meal, when I see them as glorified crisps (and I love crisps)

they often are just an opened bag of Dorritos crisps with dips splattered on - nice but hardly a meal

@Dragonairy1 they are very nice yes. I often do get them when not too overpriced and I have made my own too.

@arthurchappell my husband made some the other day with a bag of cheap tortilla chips from sainsburys, some salsa and some cheese, they were lovely.

You get more critical as you get older/ more experienced don't you? I recently had a warm chicken and bacon salad, which sounded nice and was quite tasty but in reality I could have made it myself in a few moments with a bag of mixed salad leaves and bits of pan-friend chicken and bacon.

@Fleura You are starting to sound like the 'auntie' on Goodness Gracious Me would always said "I can make at home myself with a small aubergine".

@boiboing when I was at school I used to make a lot of my own clothes. I got a bit of a reputation among my friends when we went shopping, for saying 'I could make one myself for 50p' (fabric remnants were cheaper then LOL)

@Fleura It is great if you can do it - I'd be hopeless.

They are some bars that offer decent meals at a reasonable price, but the majority are accustomed to being able to charge high prices for very little. The location plays a big part in this, so a local pub may be reasonable and a city centre establishment would be extortionate.

That is taking advantage of the situation where many cannot cook at home and so quietly take what is given to them.
