In case you missed it, today, October 13, 2015 is #NoBraDay. It’s the day when women are encouraged to leave the bra at home in support of Breast Cancer Awareness.
Here’s where I get politically incorrect.
I cannot for the life of me understand how going braless can raise breast cancer awareness. I can see how going braless would raise awareness of your breasts.
Silly me. There I go sexualizing breasts. See, that’s the thing. The same people who take every selfie they post on Facebook from an angle that looks right down into their cleavage are adamant that we must stop sexualizing breasts.
But are women without support actually supporting other women?
I think that if you want to support breast cancer research, you make a donation to the cancer society or whatever cancer research organization there is in your neck of the world.
If you want to support someone with breast cancer, why not offer to go with her when she goes for chemo or radiation? Go over and clean her house, or offer to babysit the kids so she can go out.
Make her a casserole on those days when she’s tired and sick from the treatments. Knit her an attractive hat or buy her a new scarf.
Those are things that make a difference and put the focus on those who are dealing with this disease.
Bouncing around everywhere you go will put the focus on you. That’s not supportive on any level.

I would just be uncomfortable with something like this.

I didn't know it was, but even though I'm not particularly big there's no way I wouldn't wear a bra to work, there's too many strange customers that come in, and like you I don't see how it helps cancer.

It's amazing that with all these ribbons and bracelets and slogans that we haven't cured cancer yet. I think it's fine to raise awareness, but I think some kinds of stunts take the focus off the real cause by distracting people with silly exhibitionism.

hehe, love your post. I can't for the life of me understand why cancer still exists when there is always an activity to wipe it out, We have the fun run, walking and running marathons, going braless and such. Yet cancer is not eradicated methinks it is just hiding somewhere until all the fuss is over then it show its ugly face.

What's the connection I wonder. I hope they will only stick to this and not go any further

I remember writing an article about no bra day several years back and I made more money out of that at the time than any other piece I'd written - probably for all the wrong reasons. I like your suggestions for support. Me, I'll stick with keeping my own to themselves. Those who want to flop around are welcome to, for whatever reasons they do it.

I suppose some subjects lure people in. I probably should have titled this "Take off your bra" or "Today is Topless Day" or something for maximum attention. Ah well, take the money and run. But only if you're wearing a bra. Otherwise, best to walk.

I refuse to write anything about this subject. It is better if I don't get in between the topic of this discussion.. Good to see you here Dianne
