No Bra Day

In case you missed it, today, October 13, 2015 is #NoBraDay. It’s the day when women are encouraged to leave the bra at home in support of Breast Cancer Awareness. Here’s where I get politically incorrect. I cannot for the life of me understand how going braless can raise breast cancer awareness. I can see how going braless would raise awareness of your breasts. Silly me. There I go sexualizing breasts. See, that’s the thing. The same people who take every selfie they post on Facebook from an angle that looks right down into their cleavage are adamant that we must stop sexualizing breasts. But are women without support actually supporting other women? I think that if you want to support breast cancer research, you make a donation to the cancer society or whatever cancer research organization there is in your neck of the world. If you want to support someone with breast cancer, why not offer to go with her when she goes for chemo or radiation? Go over and clean her house, or offer to babysit the kids so she can go out. Make her a casserole on those days when she’s tired and sick from the treatments. Knit her an attractive hat or buy her a new scarf. Those are things that make a difference and put the focus on those who are dealing with this disease. Bouncing around everywhere you go will put the focus on you. That’s not supportive on any level.

I did not know it was a no bra day, but it happened that yesterday I forgot to wear my bra when I went out. I am glad I had a black dress and it went unnoticed.

Some clothes are more suitable than others when people choose to go without foundation garments. You're lucky that you had the right dress on.

@LadyDuck I hate being in a rush. It's why I end up going out without socks or a coat or my handbag.

@Rollo1 I had forgot I had to go out with my husband, I heard him calling and I rushed to dress. I realized I forgot the bra when we already had moved with the car.

I would just be uncomfortable with something like this.

I didn't know it was, but even though I'm not particularly big there's no way I wouldn't wear a bra to work, there's too many strange customers that come in, and like you I don't see how it helps cancer.

It's amazing that with all these ribbons and bracelets and slogans that we haven't cured cancer yet. I think it's fine to raise awareness, but I think some kinds of stunts take the focus off the real cause by distracting people with silly exhibitionism.

I totally agree with you!!! I only go braless at night when I go to sleep. Not a pretty sight.

@DianneN We seem to have turned into a society of people who do things so they can post it on Facebook but beyond posting on social media, people don't really DO anything about the causes they say they support. It's shallow.

@Rollo1 I love all the excellent points that you made here. Going braless is (to me) totally stupid and will not help in any way.

hehe, love your post. I can't for the life of me understand why cancer still exists when there is always an activity to wipe it out, We have the fun run, walking and running marathons, going braless and such. Yet cancer is not eradicated methinks it is just hiding somewhere until all the fuss is over then it show its ugly face.

You're right. With all these braless days and bracelets and ribbons, we should have stamped it out years ago.

Great argument there.. I am not for bouncing around so much too. I do my bit for cancer awareness and friends who have cancer.

I remember writing an article about no bra day several years back and I made more money out of that at the time than any other piece I'd written - probably for all the wrong reasons. I like your suggestions for support. Me, I'll stick with keeping my own to themselves. Those who want to flop around are welcome to, for whatever reasons they do it.

I suppose some subjects lure people in. I probably should have titled this "Take off your bra" or "Today is Topless Day" or something for maximum attention. Ah well, take the money and run. But only if you're wearing a bra. Otherwise, best to walk.

I refuse to write anything about this subject. It is better if I don't get in between the topic of this discussion.. Good to see you here Dianne
