What the Heck is a Kardashian?

I'm not kidding. I keep seeing famous people described only in terms of how they relate to the Kardashians. Bruce Jenner, for instance, is somehow related by marriage to these people. Last night Lamar Odom, a former NBA player with two NBA championships to his name, was found unconscious (they're speculating a drug overdose), and all I heard was that he's the ex-husband of some Kardashian, NOT that he's a member of two NBA championship teams.
Yes, I know they have a TV show called Keeping Up With the Kardashians. As you can tell by the title of this discussion, I don't keep up with them. So, honestly, do these people have any legitimate claim to fame (e.g., singing, acting, contributing positively to the arts, something other than being self-promoting slaves to attention)?

A very incredibly rich person from having no talent whatsoever.

That doesn’t help. That also describes 2/3 of the singers and actors today.

Question @FourWalls, where do you hear famous people being called "Kardashians?" Or rather, "when" since this was written in October...
