running boards and eggs

My Mom told me again today the little farming community that her Dad was born in. She suddenly told me how her family used to take her out there to visit a relative. She said they'd bring back fresh eggs when they headed back to their city house. Her Dad tied the box of eggs to the running board on the outside of their vehicle cause there wasn't room inside. One time on that return trip another car drove so close to their car that it hit the running board and ripped the eggs off the running board. Mom did not remember any more details. I guess I have to fill in the smashed mess that occurred all over the highway and car and possibly Grandpa's German curses.
