Dark Matters?

We've been watching a TV show called Dark Matter. The premise of the show is that a crew aboard a space ship are in stasis. Suddenly they are awakened when the ship undergoes an emergency situation. Upon awakening, they realize that they don't know anyone, not even themselves. Their memories have been wiped and they know nothing of who they are and why they are on this space ship.
In this state of unknowing, they commit a few generous acts and risk their lives to save people
Later, they discover evidence of who they are and find out they are rather desperate criminals and bad guys. However, even though they now know their real names, they continue to call each other by the names they gave themselves when they first woke up, and refuse to become what they were.
What do you think? Do we create our circumstances and behave in a particular way because of who we truly are? Or are we blank slates that are written upon by our experiences, and those are what determine whether we are guardian angels or selfish criminals? And since they knew right from wrong when they woke up, regardless of having no memory and chose right, do the concepts of right and wrong transcend circumstances?
Of course, this is fiction and the characters behave the way the writers want them to. But the situation raises interesting questions. Not the least of which is: are the writers wishful thinkers, or would people with no memory automatically seek to be altruistic?

What's that saying, we are part of everything we've ever done. But why we do those things is beyond me. Why am I sitting here this morning when I said I'd do away with my morning sessions? I wish I could say I had no memory of my bold declaration.

well there is nature and there is nurture. I think most of us are a product of the situations we grew up in, but some are flat broken in their minds, even a wipe, they'd still lack empathy or the ability to connect.

You raise some interesting questions! I think we are very much influenced by the environment and our associates but eventually we are what we want to be. We do have a moral compass within us. Our Creator put it there and while it might malfunction in some, most, eventually become what they want and choose to be.

I have not seen this show but I remember I saw a movie where the script was similar to what you wrote. This is an interesting subject. I wonder how we would in a similar circumstance. Now I think to those who wake up from a long coma and they remember nothing... It would be interesting to know what they did.
