Hacking, wore me out but I still have questions....

Yes, I was hacked.
Someone asked me why I sent a particular e-mail...guess what...I didn't. So the fun and nerves began. Changing e-mail passwords, banking site passwords, all my favorite online shopping sites passwords changed. I changed more passwords that a mom changes diapers in a week.
Someone also suggested that when you are finished using a site don't just close out of it, but actually log out. Is that really necessary, any thoughts on that?
I think I have it all under control, but then again I thought the same thing early yesterday!

If you only log in using your own, home computer, it doesn't matter too much if you simply close the site without logging out. Most secure sites (such as banking sites) will log you out automatically after a certain time of inactivity.
If you are using a computer which other people use, then it IS important to log out as soon as you have finished using the site. It's also important to remember to UNcheck the "Remember me on this computer" when you log in (and it's also advisable to clear the cookies for your session if you are using a shared Windows account).
One of the commonest ways that a hacker can gain access to ALL your accounts is when you use one password for all of them, so if a hacker knows one password he will find it very easy to log into many other of your accounts.
You may find it a headache to give each account a different (and 'strong') password but you really SHOULD do it! There are various ways of creating both memorable and strong passwords and there are various ways of remembering them. I use a facility called "LastPass" which is a site which stores all my passwords securely and encrypted. I log into it with one VERY strong password (though I would never do so on a machine which I suspected had a keylogger installed) and from there I can access all my accounts without difficulty. There are several other reputable password storage sites.
You could also keep a small notebook in which you keep your passwords but it's best to encode them in some way that only you can easily decipher in case you lose the notebook or it is stolen.

No one uses my home computer but me and I never used any other.
I've been online many years and learned when I started not to use the same, or even similar, passwords on different sites.
I use a Robo Form, have for many years.
I don't keep passwords written down - and my laptop has a password too.
So basically I think it's safe not to log out of e-mail - thanks, that's pretty much what I wondered.

@AbbyGreenhill I asked, I try to resume:
"Even when you log off, data can be cached and the browser could store it as long as it is not closed. A hacker could theoretically go back to the login page and access your data, this without having to provide a username and password."
From now on I will close the browser.

I would maybe consider installing a spyware program, sometimes that can copy your passwords.

I don't bank on line - I shop online but I only use Discover Card and they are very good at catching 'strange' purchases and putting a hold on the account. I had more trouble in real life - went on a trip north and by card number was stolen from someone at the motel....and sold to someone in south africa. Your credit card info can be obtained with new devices on the market - all they have to do is walk by you and they can get your numbers...it's a scary world.
