Randomly Timed Computer Updates

When I switch off my computer I like it to shut down right away, and not delay while Windows installs up to 21 system updates with instructions to leave the computer on until they finish. I wouldn’t mind if any of these updates made the slightest difference to the look or performance of my computer the next time I log on.
I don’t know what I ever did to Bill Gates to earn such animosity. Whatever it is, I’m sorry Bill.

I'll tell you one thing. Updates are good. They fix the flaws or security holes in the program. Without the update and the fixes you're prone to hackers and viruses. You can go to your control panel and change how your computer does it's updates. You can even turn them off. I would strongly advise against turning them off unless you install them yourself. I find that most people won't go and check for updates so it's better to leave them as automatic.

@poehere I don't doubt they are useful. I do let them run their course every time. I just find their timing inconvenient.

@arthurchappell Then update your control panel to only do it once a week. You can select how often your computer installs them. If you only want it to update on Sunday then tell it so. It's easy to fix it to stop updating daily.

yes, though now you just don't get a choice - it just happens at its own will

@arthurchappell This is the worst aspect of Windows 10, it dumps unwanted updates on me whereas previously I would pick and choose.

@Asylum I remember I used to get an option of updating right away or postponing a day or two - now it just does them right away

If you were running Windows 3.11 or Windows 2000 (both excellent in their day), you wouldn't be bothered with all those updates. Mr Gates is only tacitly admitting that the version of Windows you bought was just a beta version and that they haven't really finished writing it yet.
Just imagine going to the tailor and buying a suit and then, every time you pass the shop, a flunky nips out and tells you that he just wants to make some adjustments to the pocket flaps or that he needs to make the legs narrower so that the bugs can't crawl up them so easily. Or you buy a car and then get a call from the garage every week to say that they need to fit a new glove compartment or change the number plate for one that doesn't dazzle drivers behind you.

Sometimes, when my computer is running very slowly and I decide to reboot to refresh the memory, I discover there were updates just waiting to happen. Obviously the reason for the slowdown, Microsoft was just aching to install these updates and was getting antsy waiting for me to shut down the computer.

I don't shut my pc down that often, it's not good for it to have to cold start too much, I do make it go into hibernation though
