When London Underground installed it's very first Escalator in 1911, wary passengers were so apprehensive of this never seen before, monster, that they continued to use the stairs. It is reported that, to waylay their fears and demonstrate the safety of this 'new fangled contraption,' a one-legged employee of LU,namely Bumper Harris, jumped onto it and rode up and down, until tentative passengers joined him, on the moving staircase. Harris later went on to become Clerk of Works, on the second installation of an escalator at Charing Cross. During the excavations, a very ancient Oak Tree was discovered, this great tree was not discarded, but used to make Admiralty furniture, and a special, ornamental walking stick for their 'mini-hero' Bumper Harris, presented to him in 1913...the stick and Harris’s LU pocket watch are now housed in the London Transport Museum.

I believe that the first escalators were made with wood. I remember that I saw some wooden escalators many years ago in London.

I do remember we had wooden ones in department stores in Cardiff, where I was born...but they used to make a noisy clatter as they went up and down, not much like today's..

@bookbar You are right, I remember the noisy clatter, but I liked those wooden escalators. I like old stuff.

I cannot imagine anyone not wanting to try an escalator. Maybe if it were en elevator I could understand. But an escalator, they are opened. I like this post, some nice history about this.

@bookbar I don't know. But since escalators are opened unlike elevators, I probably would have tried it. Knowing me.

we never had any of the wood variety - I think escalators only arrived in SA about 1969 so we had the metal ones installed - he he
