It was very scary

I was reading a conversation by “purplealabaster” about privacy. She is dealing with a neighbor who has video cameras aimed at her house. While having a conversation with her about this subject it reminded me of something that happened to me when I was a teenager. We lived in the country on 200 acres of farm land and woods. My dad was not a farmer but gave local farmers free use of the fields so the fields would stay as fields and not turn into woods. My dad was a hunter and hunted deer, rabbits and turkeys on his land with his friends. It was posted to keep strangers away but if anyone asked to hunt the land, Dad usually said yes., as long as they stayed off the side that our house was on. When I was a teen I was helping my mother with chores and one was to take the paper trash from the house and burn it. You can't burn your trash anymore since the community opened a dump and recycle center. This particular day I had just lit a match to burn the trash when I heard a loud bang, and I could feel a bullet blow by my head. I dropped to the ground. I saw a man down in the field with a gun, he was dressed like a hunter. No one was ever allowed to hunt on the same side of the road as the house. My mother came running out the door when she saw mw fall after the sound of a gun shot. I yelled and told her I was ok but someone was in the field shooting a gun. She called the police and it didn't take long before a state trooper showed up. I had crawled back to the house by then. (staying as low as possible) The trooper looked for the hunter and his car but he obviously realized he shot at me, not a deer and he ran. It was very scary and from that day on the state police drove down the road every day of hunting season to make sure no one was hunting on our posted land. My parents are gone and my sister renovated mom and dad's house and posted all the land that belongs to her so no one can hunt there – ever. My brother's land is posted too, but he still allows his friends to come to hunt during the season. I haven't touched a gun since that day. I don't want anything to do with hunting. How about you? Are you a hunter? If so I hope you are more careful than that idiot that almost shot me that day.

Crikey, that must have been close! And they never apprehended that idiot! I'm not against hunting for food, or if the animals need to be culled, but I don't agree with killing things for fun.

I can't even imagine anyone killing for fun but i know some do and some people kill people for fun too - the states had a sniper on the highways out west recently. The guy who thought I was a deer disappeared before the trooper got to my house. I'm sure he heard my mom scream when she thought I was shot. No one that we knew would have been hunting there. Back in the 50's, 60's it was still farm country. Today my dads land is still there but all the other farms are now housing developments.

No, I am not a hunter and I would never kill an animal. I am glad that you were not hurt.

No one hunts on that land anymore and That makes me happy. We see the deer in the fields every day during the summer.

My husband used to hunt rabbit and pheasant when we were in our early 20's but he no longer does it. He stopped hunting because he noticed that hunters were not being careful enough and he didn't want to be shot nor did he want to become lax and pick up any dangerous habits.

You are very lucky... and thank goodness the guy was a bad shot! I do not hunt. I have no interest in hunting. I used to be very opposed to hunting while I was growing up. Now I am accepting of it, but I have no desire to do it.

Talk about a close call @PainsOnSlate . It makes you wonder if these people are just plain blind. When we first bought the 20 acres we have, we were putting up fencing when shots rang passed us. Since we were the first people to buy property here, it was entirely woods and they didn't realize anybody was here but still....

That's a scary story too. I think most who hunt are careful and aware of what is around them but obviously you and I both ran in to someone who was not paying attention.
