How damaging will Hurricane Patricia be?

By now, we've all heard about Hurricane Partricia, and how it is supposed to be the biggest hurricane in the history of the World.
But weather forecasting is a fairly imprecise science.
Will the mountains in Western Mexico break it up, leading to severe but not unprecedented storms throughout Mexico?
Will flooding in Texas be severe?
Selfishly, I hope the mountains turn it into several smaller fronts, with one spiraling North to California. We need the rain badly, and Patricia is not predicted to affect us up here in Northern California.
What do you think will happen?

It is supposed to be the worst storm ever recorded I. History, but if have my doubts. After all, how many other times have we heard that in the past? I don't doubt it will be terrible. The question is, how terrible?

In contrast, Hurricane Katrina wasn't much of a hurricane when it hit Florida, and most people thought it would fizzle out by the time it crossed the peninsula and hit the Gulf. It turned out to be the third worst hurricane in US history.

@FourWalls I'd forgotten that Katrina didn't do much damage in Florida, and worsened as it crossed the Gulf.

I don't know, but whatever it is, it won't be carried live on TV. It's 11 PM here, and I just checked the news channels and the Weather Channel...NOBODY is covering the storm.

@TheHorse some folks seem to cling to the belief such horrors occur elsewhere 'n fail to take the precautions necessary. i hear tell they're already gettin' rains in the dallas area? i surely hope that when the rains come to cali, they're gentle 'n slow fer a few days to open up that parched ground.

The last hurricane of this size that I remember offhand was Carla (1961), also a cat 5 storm. I was on my way to college in Beaumont, Texas but rode out the storm in Nacogdoches, in east Texas before going on to school. At the time I'm writing this response, Patricia has already started breaking up over the mountains and Texas is having flash floods over most of the state. The remnants are moving east, even as I type.
I haven't heard the latest news about damage or casualties, but if it's as bad as Carla was, the damages will be huge. Our house was flooded by Carla but only to the height of a foot and a half. That was enough to ruin the wooden underlayment and the floors had to be chopped up before they pushed out the walls. The water was not exactly just water, but was sludge. There were snakes in the house too. My parents had to deal with it. They weren't alone either. All our neighbors and a huge number of the people in our town suffered major damage to their homes and property.

I saw a diagram this morning comparing it to Hurricane Katrina.
It figures the one and only time that I can recall a hurricane bearing my name would be a CAT 5!

@Pattitude I'll try not to make you mad. Especially if you're operating on my brain or some other important organ at the time.

@TheHorse Sounds like me, though, slowly brewing until getting to an explosive state!

I have no idea what will happen but do hope that there is little loss of life. But the weather reports are not encouraging at this time.

Even though I have never experienced a hurricane, I have read that they are devastating and umpredictable. Let´s hope for the best.

They are especially concerned about the people in the little villages along the coast of Mexico. Many of them have no idea this hurricane is about to pummel them.
