Is marriage a dying institution?

United States

Maybe I shouldn't call it an institution, that might be a turn off right there! But back to my point....is marriage going the way of the horse and buggy? So many of the 'younger generations' are still living at home and not married into their 30's or 40's. Those that have a significant other are not interested in making the big commitment. Marriage is, or should be something to look forward to, but it seems it is something to avoid in this day and age. Divorce is poplar, heck, I'be been there myself, but only once. What do you think?

I got married right after high school and had 3 children from that marriage. Unfortunately, he turned out to be psychotic and physically abusive. I was able to escape him after 4 years of marriage and have not married since, although I did have two close calls! :D

That's a shame you had to go through that. Sounds like you have it under control and happy single now.

For the first time in history in my native city the "single" are the 54% of the population. I think that the marriage is disappearing. My niece lives with her boyfriend, they both own an apartment, but they do not even think to have an official marriage.

@AbbyGreenhill In Italy surely the two. Married couples pay higher taxes and a divorce is a long and expensive procedure. You cannot have this in a few months, you need to be separated at least 5 years before starting the divorce procedure.

Yes, a fading institution, for now.. But true love will never die! :) I believe I see the dissolution of family and society around me, which caused Rome to fall in a day. This comment does not mean I am against gay marriage, as I believe it is covered in the constitution (of my country) under "the right to pursuit of happiness" besides, God gave the ability of choice. We're all learning good from evil, what works from what doesn't. Peace & blessings! :)

I guess fading is a better word! They also say second marriages only have 50 percent survival rate...we're in year 18!

I'm probably the wrong person to ask. I got married before I graduated high school. I'm not kidding. My married name is on my high school diploma and I graduated on time!

@Samanthavv Congrats. I have friends who had to get married right out of high school, people said it wouldn't last, that was in 1965 and they are still married.

Nope it ain't true here, Philippines and Vatican are the only two remaining states or country with no divorce, the younger, lower income generation seem to forgo but only because of financial constraints but are always looking forward to the day. So sorry it does not make me qualified to be an expert on the field LOL!

Strange but true Abby, at this time and age, it's something that would puzzle even Ripley, no seriously i think it has something to do with with the deep rooted Catholic religion mixed with our unique sense of values although i for one is a Baptist Christian.

My 26 year old daughter is not even thinking about marriage and that is ok with me. Not in her case, but in many, student debt is strangling life plans about family, marriage, buying homes. I heard a short interview with a young woman college grad. her parents were educators, but she could not consider that route for herself since she would not make enough to pay her debt.

There are many things wrong with the system, and yeah, many have seen the costs more than the benefits.
