As everyone knows, the ground squirrels ate the real garden we planted where I work. But that didn't stop me and my kid clients from planting some crops in little cups and taking them home. Here are two of my hardy little friends. One left is a green bean plant. On the right is a squash plant. The squash plant is throwing a flower! But soon, the cooler temperatures will take both to plant heaven. Still, it's fun to have stuff growing on my balcony. Are you harvesting right now? Will you miss your gardens as Winter takes over?

Your little plants look strong and healthy. Too bad you don't have a lawn to plant them. I have a bunch of avocado plants growing in pots on my deck, but they too, will be gone soon, They are the only plants that will grow there other than ivy.

Interesting. How come other warm weather plants like corn, squash and tomatoes don't do well there?

We have no winter here but my garden's enemy is flood, too much heat and also plant pests. But I am doing every thing to keep my garden protected.

I live in the other sideof the world, so for me it is planting time. Today I planted around 10 tomato plants. That should be enough when the season comes. I have some lettuce and I hope to plant some radishes tomorrow.

Do you do big 'maters or little ones. I've done the little cherry ones in Oakland.

Right now, I have no marigolds. I have two green and red celosia flowers, and 1-2 morning glories. I will miss them 100%. Next year, I'll be replanting them and adding new plants next spring. Nice plants!

Glad you have a plan. If we don't get a lot of rain this Winter, I'll be doing balcony plants only next year. Plus a few corn and bean plants at the preschool where I substitute teach.

@KristenH Do you grow corn? I went to College In Iowa and fell in love with corn. They grow it in Ohio too, right? I love seeing rows of corn (even if they're only five plants long).

@poehere Maybe I'll be able to find a friend with a lot of space and sunlight. I'll start thinking.

@TheHorse Yes. We do get heavy showers but those that need less rain are sheltered.

What state are you moving to? Do gardens grow well in Colorado? I've never tried in Montana, though friends up there have.

@TheHorse Are they still around munching on your plants? I believe that squirrels do not hibernate in California, not cold enough.

The squash plants were the last (besides the cacti) to be eaten by the ground squirrels.

I usually transplant them into the ground before they get this big. If it were earlier in the season, I'd at least try a bigger planter.

my garden was worthless this year. i hope to make it better next year

Where I live, the sand is awful, and totally lacking in nutrients. To have a garden, one must drag in tons of topsoil, manure and mulch. I don't have the energy or the money for all that. So I plant fruit trees. They don't require as much watering, and the roots can go deeper for more nutrients. I do mulch them, though, with tree bark from the tree trimming companies. It works wonders. I love a garden, though, and used to have one in New York.

Fruit trees sound like a good solution there. I buy a few bags of really good soil, but our soil isn't that bad to begin with. It's just really dry right now.

They look hearty. Can't you take them inside and grow them instead of letting them go to plant heaven?

That's thought! I'd have to clear up a space for them, though. I don't really have a window with good sun exposure.
