The following is a letter I received 4 years ago, on my 21st birthday. I don't know who sent it. The postmark wasn't clear, although at the time I could almost read it, I believe it said Salem. I've kept it locked away in a safe and I bring it out once in a while for laughs. Maybe you can make some sense out of it. Here goes...
Dear Miss Sharon Donaldson,
You may wonder why I am writing to you, but if you continue to read to the end you may have a better understanding of your life. There is no easy way to tell you this. Please accept the fact that I am only trying to help you understand what is going to happen to you in the future so that you will be prepared.
Your mother was, and still is, one of us. Didn't you always think she was a little 'off'? I am sure you did. You heard her chanting, you know she believed in the supernatural and you know that she frequently vanished for days at a time. When she returned to your little family she always had some excuse for her disappearance. Your father never knew the truth. Since his death last year I feel it is my responsibility to finally give you the truth, because the truth will set you free my dear. Or should I say it will set you free from life as you know it now.
Your mother, the lovely raven haired Cassandra, was a witch. I mean that in the nicest way possible. She was, how do I put this, one of us. Yes, I am a witch and have great powers beyond what the others have. They look up to me for guidance and reflection. My coven is one of the most desirable and many try to join, but many fail.
Your mother was held in high regard in the coven until she strayed and married a mere mortal. Have you wondered why your father had so many accidents and so many times his life seemed to balance on a tightrope? Those deeds were easily accomplished by the coven members under my direction. I never get my hands dirty; I have others for the job. Your father finally pushed his luck last year when he had a good idea of what Cassandra was really up to. Hopefully he took that information to the grave with him. I alone decide who knows what and I alone make sure only those who need to know receive vital information.
That is why I am writing you dear child. It is time you found out the truth. Your father, the one you loved so much, was your father in name only. His seed is not the seed of life where you are concerned. Your mother was part of a bargain the coven planned out. She so wanted to be one of us that she would agree to do anything asked of her.
She wanted to be important in the coven and I knew that. The plan was that she would have a daughter who would be granted a perfect life as a non-believer until she reached her 25th birthday. At that time her life would then belong to the coven. You are that daughter and when you reach 25 years of age you will be ours. If you are not turned over to us at the specified hour, your mother's hell will begin. She will not be allowed to leave us, not even to visit her family ever again. This is a no-win situation for Cassandra.
Beware my child as the time draws near. You may not believe in ghosts or goblins, but you better believe in me. On the 25th year of your birth at 13 minutes after the stroke of midnight, you will belong to us. There is no escape. Watch and wait....watch and wait...
The letter was not signed, but there were drops of blood that stained the paper.
Now that you read the witch's letter to me, what do you think, is it nonsense or what? The best way to deal with it, for me anyway, is to just laugh it off. My 25th birthday is today and nothing happened yet, nothing is going to happen. It's all mumbo-jumbo. I refuse to fall for any of this. Witches, ghosts, supernatural - sure, right! I'm going to go work in the garden for a while since the weather is so nice.
The phone is ringing I better get it, wait, the doorbell is ringing also. I'll get the door first. Maybe my boyfriend had flowers delivered.
"No, no, I don't believe this...what are you doing?" "I won't go with you, I can't go with you, leave me alone mother, mother stop, please stop..."
As the answering machine picked up the incoming call the following words echoed in the empty house....."You are mine now, the coven is complete..."

@AbbyGreenhill I wrote a couple things for them, then for whatever reason didnt (even though money was tight, I wish I had known about this site then, we really could have used the money), no idea what I even wrote now.

@Jessicalynnt I was there for several years, I was a community guide, and a featured writer in travel and pets. I did quite well.

@Rosekitty Some I actually follow-ups but most of them no. I never really had a desire to write a book even though I have/had a zillion ideas.

@NeldaHoxie I know, and I have to be in the right frame of mind to write one. They just happen, I can't make them happen.

@AbbyGreenhill It takes a special talent to write short stories. There's no room to meander around a plot.

Is it nearly Halloween? I enjoyed reading that letter though, I like to read about these things.
