We Were Warned and Salmon Spawning

Its not often that a hurricane hits Ontario Canada. But it's happening now. I woke up in the middle of the night to the sound of rain on the roof, lots of it.
My husband was up and I heard him leave so I thought it was 6AM and he left for the YMCA. I looked at the clock and it said 3:30...What? I got up to see what was going on and found him saving our newspaper from soaking up all the water it could. He must have heard the driver throw it onto our driveway. There nothing as frustrating as getting up in the morning and finding the newspaper sitting in a puddle of water. Yes its in a plastic bag but it's often wet because the knot in the bag doesn't stop the water.
The news last night was the rain would start in the middle of the night and will continue all day. The winds are going to show up later and I imagine our leaves will be off the trees and on the ground when that happens. We're told it will be a major storm. Flooding is expected so everyone is warned to stay away from the streams that move water to Lake Ontario. There are hundreds of those streams in our area.
The salmon are spawning right now. The paper had a photo of one of the huge fish that come out of Lake Ontario and go up stream to spawn in smaller and safer lakes and ponds. In the spring the water is full of babies heading back to the Great Lake. Its fascinating to watch and photograph.
Its a struggle for those huge fish to wiggle their way up the shallow streams to find a place to spawn. This storm today with its flooding should make their trip a lot easier.
Before I moved here I'd only seen the salmon migration up stream on TV. Have you been lucky enough to see it in person too?
If you are in this storm today, stay safe.

We're not expecting it to be awful but we won't know until its over. The first time I saw it the salmon I had stopped to take photos of the fall colors across a small lake years ago and seeing the fish at work was a bonus.

Nope, never seen a salmon in person.
I hope your weather changes again soon.
We are getting rain and winds, but nothing serious. I hear next week is supposed to be nice again.. in the 60's.

I was thinking it was going to be a ton of rain and a lot of wind, instead we got a hard rain but no floods and the wind didn't knock anything down and that's a good thing.

I hope to take a drive tomorrow to a stream nearby and see if I can catch any of those fish with my camera.

@PainsOnSlate That's good. It must be a relief to not have to worry about your house flooding.

I live half way up the escarpment (our mountain) so there is no flooding where I live. I have the ravine in the back yard and the stream in it might flood but its over 100 feet below us so no worries.

The rain has stopped but I can hear the wind outside now. We all hope to stay safe. O just looked out and the beautiful leaves are flying everywhere. I hope that is the only things that fall down today.

We are fine, I think the salmon are too. I will drive down to the area where I saw the fish before and see if I can get any photos.

It looks like a lovely day here in Canada. The winds are still reported for later today. Maybe, maybe not..Our rain just lasted one full day.

I hope you are still away from any flooding.
We have land-locked salmon that spawn in the creeks that feed into our lake in BC. It's a beautiful site to see them swim upstream.

There was no flooding that hurt anything that I know of. Just lots of rain. I hope to get a photo of the salmon today if they are still moving.

I haven't personally seen the salmon. Sounds fascinating. Be safe in all that wetness.

When you said your husband had got up in the middle of the night I was afraid he had to take action to save your home or something, thank goodness it was only the newspaper!!
Yes I have seen salmon leaping upstream in Scottish rivers, before that I had only seen it on TV like you, it was amazing to see in real life. No matter how much you see on film, seeing the real thing is still stunning.

Its raining cats and dogs but that is all, no wind or anything yet. I'm heading for the Y in a while and wonder what the roads will be like but Hubby has been out a couple times today and says its just wet. I will be checking the salmon as soon as the rain stops.I'll take my camera too. It is awesome to see.

Our rain has slowed and it might be over but the wind has picked up. My beautiful leaves are flying around and the trees will soon be bare.
