Peachy

While in Europe - Zurich to be exact - we found these strange looking peaches: Donut looking but because when in Zurich do as the Swiss do, we bought a few and enjoyed them. I did not know then that they were from Spain but did recognize that the grapes were imported from South Africa. This was over a year ago and only last week when i went to my local greengrocer (SPAR) I found them on the shelves imported from SPAIN. They cost $4 for six . . . . pricey but then I think we paid almost the same in Zurich, Switzerland. I am so delighted that I can show my friends the donut peaches we described, and they found difficult to believe! "Saturn peaches, also known as Donut (Doughnut) peaches, are a variety of peach with white flesh and a flattish, round shape." Have you had any odd looking fruit lately? - I tried to upload the photo but it keeps giving me TIMEOUT - will try later

I have eaten peaches but not the kind you have described. I had to search and found an image which I am uploading here. We get the ordinary peaches here in India but I had heard a lot about peaches in Italy. When I visited that country I did go to a mall and picked up some but was disappointed as they were sour.

We've had these peaches in the UK for two or three years now. They don't appear very often but they are especially sweet and juicy. I think that the last time I bought them they were only 69p (around $1US or 15 Rand) for 6!

I first was introduced to them 5 or 6 years ago when a work colleague brought some in, I left that job in 2010 so I know it was at least that long ago!

@Inlemay No, they probably came by lorry and sea. We get quite a lot of produce from Spain.

The grocery store down the street has started carrying rambutans. When they first began stocking them they were $2/pound, but since then the price has dropped down to $0.50/pound. They're bizarre things--the outside is covered with soft 'spines' while the inside is a clear fruit with an almond-shaped seed in the middle. Of course my kids love them, so I have to buy them fairly regularly now. I haven't seen the Saturn peaches in a while, but they are carried in several of the local stores. They tend to run about $3.99-$4.99 a pound, from what I remember. I rarely buy them because of that.

I've never had rambutans (though I think I have seen them on our market). From what I gather they are much the same as lychees, which we usually get in tins here and are delicious.

@owlwings They're pretty closely related to lychees, from what I understand. Both are extremely exotic things around here. Our native produce runs more toward cactus fruit and pads than that sort of thing...

They are popular now, but they are part of the very ancient fruits in Italy. We call them "pesche della vigna" (peaches of vineyards). Those were small threes that were always planted in the vineyards because, at harvesting times, the peasants picked up the peaches to relief their thirst. We also call them vineyards peaches here in the south of Switzerland, around $ 3.00 for 6 at Aldi. Now the season is over.

@Inlemay The ones that come from Spain are good, but nothing compared with the old wild specie, they were pink inside and delicious.

@LadyDuck the ones we got here last week were more pink inside than those I bought in Zurich - those were whitish. I love them anyway - How are you doing

well that is an interesting story - makes sense as well - I am so happy that our local produce market is stocking them - only a few at a time but he said he would keep me stock when it arrives.

My landlord brought me a bag of loquats. Never had them but really liked them. I never saw them in stores and raved so much, that they brought me a tree to plant. I would love to try an "out of this world" peach.

Oh, I want to see the photo. Try making it smaller, that is usually the problem when they don't load.

@Inlemay Actually i haven't tasted a real peach fruit . It's always the canned one and that's with some syrup and they're delicious . That's because this fruit isn't indigenous here .

I'm not sure if those peaches are a recent development, they have only appeared here in the last 5 years or so too.

I have never heard of them before but I bet they are delicious. I do miss peaches because we don't get any here on the islands. I wish they would import some for us here
