I just read that ISIS has claimed responsibility for shooting down a Russian airliner that crashed in the the Sinai Peninsula region of Egypt, killing all 224 people on board. Do you believe them? I hadn't known that ISIS, basically a third-world force, had the technology to shoot down an airliner cruising at probably 36,000 feet or so. I hate to admit it, but a part of me was glad to read they'd claimed responsibility. With the US and Russia at odds, they need something to unify them, even if it's mutual hatred toward a common evil. Your thoughts?

I heard it, although Russia denies it, and it is difficult to believe, except if the plane was at a low flight level (under 20000 feet). We have to wait for the results coming from the experts.

@Susan2015 I also do not think that ISIS shot it. Many companies had already decided to not fly over the Sinai, because there was a risk, but it was more theoretical than real for an Airbus, as ISIS has not the right missiles to shot an Airbus flying at its normal flight level (30 to 38000 feet).

I heard later that the plane was at 31,000 feet, a bit below my guess. But after that, I heard that it crashed only 20 minutes after takeoff, so wouldn't it still have been climbing?

@topffer That was my thought. I don't think ISIS has that kind of technology. But maybe they used someone on board. I know nothing of security procedures for Russian airlines.Do you think they're as thorough as American and Israeli airlines?

It's hard to believe but I'm not surprised they'd claim it to get back at Putin for supporting Assad.

@TheHorse That's what I'm thinking. Keep in mind that the Russians had the whole western world thinking they had a lot more nukes than they ever did - it's not just rebel crazy groups that make up such things.

@boiboing Did we really overestimate the number of nukes the Soviet Union had? I hadn't realized that. Can you imagine nukes in the hands of third-world barbarians like ISIS?

And to make it look like they are more powerful than they actually are.

For what ever reason we need to wipe the ISIS off the face of the Earth.

Very true. But difficult to do, as they're trying to infiltrate as many countries as they can.

The authorities said that it is too early to say if it is an accident, a missile or a bomb placed inside the a baggage. I fear that the security at some airports is surely not what it should be.

@TheHorse I know that due to the many terrorist attacks in Egypt, security forces are situated at the international airports, but you can nothing if someone inside the airport "help" to load dangerous material on board of the planes.

Department of transport officially denied ISIS version, "technical problem was the reason" mass media tend to claim

Either way, the Russian response was swift & brutal, inflicting more damage on ISIS in a weekend than the US did in a whole month!

It seems the plane split up near the rear of the plane. Tail section and most of fuselage were separate. Not sure if this happened upon impact or during descent.
