Dead last

I was so heart broken when they announced our scores at the Marching Band championships. We came in dead last in our division. Our score was a 78, which actually wasn't too terrible for us. In the beginning of the season we were only scoring a 66 and moved up to a 67. Two weeks ago we scored 72.. So our band definitely made some major improvements throughout the season, but it wasn't enough to keep us out of last place. We faced 9 other bands so got 10th place. It's really disheartening for our kids, but it was a difficult season all around. Our last director left at the end of last school year, after this show had already been decided. So we had a brand new instructor working with the vision of an old instructor. Also the music was too difficult for our kids. We had an Arabian theme with some difficult music, and half of our band is middle school kids. I'm hoping the new instructors can create a better show for next year, playing to the strengths of the younger kids, and make a huge come back. We got home at 11pm as I had to stay and work a concession stand. After that I sat and talked with my husband for a bit who had been on prop crew for our band so was in the thick of it all and got to hear everyone's reactions and ideas on why we lost. I went to bed at midnight and was up at 6am... and I don't think I slept really well either. It's going to be a long day!

@katsmeow1213 My sister got called up for the school lacrosse team many years ago. They lost 29-0. She was the goalie but she went back and did it again.

@boiboing My son has no thoughts of ever quitting Marching Band. Actually he wants to join a state wide Marching Band. My daughter was talking of quitting a few weeks ago, and it has nothing to do with how they're doing this year. She said she didn't fully enjoy it last year and is still not enjoying it, and she wants to free up her schedule to study on school work. I am thinking though of making her do just 1 more season before deciding on leaving. I feel this was a rough year and I am hoping next year is better, so I want her to try it one last time before giving it up.

Well, that is a shame. Sorry to hear the past director left. Have to keep on trying. Pretty unfair to lose a director. I think that is rather selfish to me.

He had no choice, he was not doing a good job so they told him to quit or get fired. He chose to quit and is now working in another district but he's not the director there.

@katsmeow1213 ...That really sucks. It sounds like these kids need a good director to come in and help them with their problems. Not their fault if they come up last when they don't have the right tool needed to do a good job.

@celticeagle The director they have now was the middle school instructor last year and the middle school band did awesome, but as I said, he was working with a different director's vision and instructors. I will wait to see what happens next year before passing judgement on this instructor. I think he could be really good.

I think the important thing to take away from this is that the band improved over the season. And perhaps next year there won't be any confusing changes in leadership so that the improvement can continue.

That stinks you all got last place but that means they can work harder and be more prepared for next year. Sorry you didn't sleep well, i actually slept pretty good last night for once.
