What Wrong With A Wonky Carrot?

We are currently watching a BBC one program about the way Britain wastes food and it is totally shocking! Just as an example if a carrot is a bit to wonky the British supermarkets won't sell them, seriously guys they will taste just perfect, they might not look pretty but they will taste yummy. They are also showing how much perfectly good food British households throw away, to Katie and I this is just alien as we don't throw anything away. We shop fresh as and when we need it, making super that everything we buy get used. Basically we can not afford to live any other way, wasting food and therefore money just seems made to us. Right back to the wonky carrot once again, why exactly do the supermarkets here in Britain think it is better to bin a wonky carrot rather than sell them? Food is food and with all the poverty issues across the globe why are we throwing perfectly good food away?

It is common knowledge that fruit has to meet certain measures in order to be sold. It´s a shame how many good food is discarded for absurd reasons

@mrtoffee Probably it has to do in part with the values of a society that in more worried about how we look than in what we are,

@marguicha it really is sad that society has moved towards this approach of judging everything by looks.

the question is why does fruit and veg have to look a certain way though @marguicha it's all a bit silly as taste surely has to come first in these things.

It is indeed bad to throw off food materials. I personally know many people here who are in depth of poverty and eat small and cheap things. I prefer the people who waste food to come up here and spend some time with them.

I think that would be a fantastic idea @rahulvsmokiee if people could see how those in real poverty live they would not take all they have for granted or throw away perfectly good food.

@mrtoffee I am sure that they are going to cry by seeing their condition. i even see people eating their own human waste in a documentary. Isnt it sad?

@rahulvsmokiee it's really sad, especially as we could solve the problem be sharing the so called wrong shape veg with those who are starving!

It's the same way here. They used to give away misshapen produce for "livestock feed," but they don't even do that any more. Seems that people were eating it (gasp!).

In many cases products that do not conform to what people generally expect are discarded prior to ever reaching the supermarkets. This is all related to the fanatical attitude that stores have for presentation, but is quite clearly absurd.

@mrtoffee It is even sillier considering that the majority of carrots are sliced or diced before being cooked. They will be insisting that we use only certain shapes of potato to make mash with next.

@Asylum they were talking about potato earlier in the program which seemed totally mad as like you say we mash or even chop them up to roast, which means that size and shame makes no sense at all. If it tastes good its perfect for me, I really do not understand the whole shape and size thing at all.

it's totally absurd ism't to @asylum I really worry for the UK if we are so hooked up on how our fruit and veg looks rather than tastes.

Well it works out pretty well for me because our regular stores sells them at reduced prices, so everybody keep wasting so we can get some cheap veggies. Also, somebody's gotta feed the freegans.

@cupkitties I wish our stores did that here in England, I for one would certainly buy the odd looking veggies.
