party games

I am a dope when it comes to parties. I make the cake and brew the tea, set out pretty china, and maybe a little chocolate. Maybe some cheese and crackers.
Now what? Stand or sit and stare at each other chewing food? Figure out pleasantries?
Help. Party games for adults and seniors in particular? Anyone have any?
I just saw the idea of writing on slips of paper: My Mom or Dad told me to..... and then the party goer writes down what they did and put the paper into a hat or bowl. Later the celebrated person reads out what was written. Gives a prize to the goofiest. Does this sound stupid or something you would participate in? Ideas? Thanks.

even kids games are fun for adults - you can still have fun with pass the parcel and musical chairs as a grown up

You are right though I am not sure about Pass the Parcel game. The old telephone game is good if you have enough people- one person whispers something into another's ear and by the time you get to the last person, all kinds of stuff has been said or not.

@sallypup statues is good too - people move or dance around until the music stops and have to freeze like statues - the slightest flicker of movement and they are out

A version of that could be "My mom or dad told me NOT to," which could be funnier. Or someone starts a sentence, writes it on a piece of paper, and the other person finishes the sentence without reading the first half.
