So I met with the band teacher this morning, and the counselor, and the special ed teacher, with an assistant principal thrown in for good measure. Basically, what Cary needs to do to get his grade up in band is to practice two pieces of music, record them in the band room, and get graded on them. So we set up a schedule so that he would have time to learn the music, dates and class periods to do the recording, and done. We also caught up his other late homework from math and reading.
I'm still not thrilled that the band teacher didn't even know that he's a special ed student. imho the school should flag the students on the roster so that the teachers know and can look up what their IEP says. But OK, if I have to notify every teacher as school starts, I will.
Fun being a mom. Yup...

In California each teacher is given a confidential list of each student with any special needs at all. They are very comprehensive. There are codes on the pages of the roll book and online attendance that act as reminders. It is surprising that your teachers are not given such support. There are so many kids on these lists, it would be absurd if the system expected teachers to keep this all in their heads.

We are in California, and the band teacher says he didn't know, so I'm assuming this district doesn't have that. Maybe with 90 kids in the class he just overlooked it. But definitely it would be crazy to expect the teachers to know all that.

@dawnald It's a state requirement, but that doesn't mean that the school district or teacher is in compliance. Having 90 kids in one class would make this tough, but all teachers have about 150-180 students. The paperwork isn't so long, since it just includes the kids with issues.

Fun being a grandmom that has to over see all these things and make sure the daughter does them too. I think that if a student is in a regular class the teacher has no way of knowing anything and unless they care to really learn something about each student they never do. Ugh!

Honestly, his heart isn't totally in band any more. He's taking it because the high school requires a year of an art.

i would also think the school should do the "informing" but it seems when you're the "minority" you have to always double-check everything.
