Would You Fly Long Haul On A Low Cost Airline

Earlier I had and advert on my mylot page mentioning an article about Ryanair starting long haul flights to America so I clicked through and had a read. It seems that by 2017 Ryanair want to be flying to and from America with fare sometime being as low as £10 each way, although it did say to expect an average fee of £100 each way. To me this seems extremely cheap, but then I though about all the extra costs these low budget airlines charge for things like food and baggage. If I am very honest I do not think I would fly for that long on a low budget airline, mainly because they are often not the most comfortable planes and being stuck in a small cramped seat for 7 or 8 hours seems no fun at all. What do you guys think of flying long haul with a low cost airline, would you give it a go or stick with the main carriers.

It is uncomfortable enough to fly in tourist class with a normal airline (such as Delta), I would not dare to fly on a low cost airline.

@mrtoffee In the recent years the big companies have narrowed the space to fit more passengers, it's horrible to sit in a plane for eight hours or ten hours.

@LadyDuck it sure is Anna, we collect air miles so we can upgrade for free when we fly, mind we can only afford to fly transatlantic every few years even with the air miles to help.

I wouldn't mind trying it, but I think I would first fly somewhere close with them to test the waters. Like you said, long flights are a pain so I wouldn't want to be uncomfortable. I've used low cost carriers before and they are fine. The seats are a bit tight and you're really just paying for a seat, but the price is unbeatable. I think there are a few LCC that I wouldn't mind flying long flights with.

I would prefer not to have to go on a long haul flight at all, but if I did I would want to have as much luxury as I could afford.

I would never fly with Ryanair even short haul let alone Long haul. They bump up their charges on food, baggage and other bits a pieces. Plus if you do not print off your tickets and boarding cards at home they charge you around £40 which is equivalent to around $60. Often they do not work out that much cheaper than a scheduled flight with one of the biggies, I am afraid for a number of years now I have only flown business class especially long haul as being squashed in economy is detestable!

I am ex-airline and the seat sizes on them would be the same as other airlines except first class or biz class leg room and seat size. I recommend looking at performance of airlines, on time, delays, cancelled flights, crashes..If I go very far (over 3 1/2 hrs) I plan to go first class. Some flights although connect take 24 -hrs like from Canada to India and I would HAVE to go first class on them or not go!
