Attracting Problems to Our Lives

Does how you live your life influence the amount of problems you attract? I have observed that this may be so.
There is an acquaintance who lives a troubled life. She has extreme emotional ups and downs, lies to people, even her husband, keeps secrets, starts arguments, and alienates her family. She is manipulative, and yet tries to present as a nice, caring, Christian woman. I have known her a long time, and before she started drinking as much as she does now, was a nice, hardworking individual who tried to do the right thing.
But this person has more bad happening to her than anyone I know. Especially illnesses. Not little ones, either. Life threatening ones. In fact, she is in the hospital right now with a serious infection that is not responding to antibiotics.
In my heart of hearts, I care very much what happens to her. Somehow, she got off the tracks, it seems, and has brought terrible misery to her life. In just about every area, she has trouble. But, she also enjoys drama, so seems to use these episodes to gain attention, when there aren't many people left in her life, it seems.
Over time I have tried to help her in various ways, and we have had our differences, for sure. As a result, I now stay my distance, and am always just polite.
It seems that our activities in life are like a spider web. Our actions are like the threads that are carefully woven, which catch energies passing by. But it seems that instead of us removing the web or designing it so that bad things can pass through, we sometimes weave it stronger, as we may feel somehow that it is protecting us.
These are just thoughts. I cannot make sense of some people's lives being in such disarray otherwise. And it might not just be our activities, but our thoughts, feelings and intentions that contribute as much to our own demise.

Once we start down a thorny path it is hard to make it right again. It seems she has indeed been the cause of her own troubles. Hopefully she will be able to get her life back on track.
