No one as much as gives a second look at crotons. One hardly finds them in gardens today But not our garden. It has the pride of place because when there is no other colour corotons do not let us down

No, not a crouton, but a croton: it's a plant.

Where I live, in Kansas in the central US, Crotons must be brought inside in the winter. I have one beautiful multi colored one that I have managed to keep alive for three years or more and I am proud of it. There are several varieties.

Just because they are easily available and common, people tend to brush them aside. I have even wild flowers in my garden.

We donĀ“t have those beautiful plants in my country. But the first time I saw them I thought they were amazing.

That is the sad part. What grows cheaply is not appreciated.

I've never heard of that one before! But there again, my gardening knowledge is pretty minimal.

They are hardy plants requiring least maintenance and can be propagated through cuttings. What is easy to grow and available easily does not get importance but I am different. I have brought in wild flowers too.

@allknowing requiring least maintenance sounds perfect to me! We have a lot of native plants like that, not so colourfu though

@valmnz If you can get hold of these nothing like adding colour to your garden.

i have never heard or seen this plant i think it probably isn't very popular with the younger generations.

As matter of fact I wonder if gardening per se is popular with the younger generation

@lokisdad I wish they got into the nitty gritty of things just as we did. Life can be so exciting with that approach.

@allknowing probably not nearly as much as they should but its mostly because everything has been simplified so that they don't have to know those kinds of things like we used to have to know growing up.

that's jest gorgeous! i wish they'd live in these parts outdoors. i used to've a couple that i'd set 'round the pond but fear the larger plants needs indoors durin' winter caused 'em to perish.

You have this problem of extreme weather. And despite this I have seen some pictures of great gardens of those living out there.

@allknowing i used to've beautiful gardens 'n then the drought came...'n stayed. i'll be rethinkin' what's planted from now on - stickin' with the native plants 'n wildflowers with jest a few 'foreigners' added to the mix :)

I'm not sure that I've ever met a croton. I think my parents said, when I was little, "Don't play with crotons."

What's that? I have never heard of any kids playing with crotons. Your mother must have meant croutons which are eatables. Perhaps you were playaing with them and not eating them

it's called "parpagayo" in my dialect.. this is found in most homes in the philippines.. it's actually attractive and most moms here love to place these in front of their houses..
