Current Quilt Project

My current quilt project is the one I was given to work on that had been started by my great-grandma years ago. It is made out of the clothes my mom and her sisters, not sure about the brothers, used to wear. The clothing was cut into diamond type shapes and then sewn into hexagons. They were then sewn into rows. There was one row completed and a few started when I was given the box a couple of months ago. So far I have only had to sew one hexagon myself, the rest has just been sewing the hexagons together. I've also sewn several of the rows together and am finally down to the last three rows. It's been frustrating because everything was hand cut, so nothing lays perfectly and there are puckers all over the place. Now I'm starting to think about how I'm going to finish the quilt but am struggling with that. As it's made out of hexagons, the sides aren't straight. I've come up with two ideas on how to straighten the sides, but I'm not sure which one to do. One idea is to make half-hexagons out of the same diamond shapes that the rest is made out of, I have plenty, and the other is to cut out half hexagons out of another fabric all together. If I do the diamonds one, I either have to sew full hexagons together and then cut them in half or cut several of the diamond shapes in half and then sew the half-hexagons together. If I go the new fabric I have to decide what color to go with. Whether to have it the same as the border fabric, or skip the border all together, or to have it the same as the back fabric, or the binding. I also have to decide if I want to use a binding on it or skip that too. Any suggestions you may have are welcome. I included a picture of what the end of the rows looks like in case my description isn't clear.

What a mammoth task! I wouldn't begin to give any suggestions as I'm useless at sewing and not much better at working out what colours go with what. Having said that, I think a one-colour border would look nice. Whatever you do, it will be stunning when it's finished, puckers and all. It will have a great deal of meaning for your family - those that remember the people of course.

I'm hoping to give it to my mom for Christmas, since it was her grandma that started this out of the clothes my mom and her sisters wore. I have to get it finished first though. I'm leaning towards a light colored, or white, border, just not sure what to do to make the sides straight first though.

@fawkes62 I guess you need to get the sides straight first before tackling the border. I hope you post another photo once it is finished. Does your Mum know you're working on it?

@JudyEv She's the one that gave it to me but I haven't told her that I am working on it yet. I figured it would be a good Christmas gift if I leave it a surprise. Right now I'm trying to decide how to make the sides straight. I've got a few ideas, mentioned above, but I'm not sure which one to go with.

After seeing the picture, I can understand the problem. I don't quilt so I don't really have any suggestions to offer. I do like the quilt as it reminds me of my grandmother. She used to make quilts all the time from clothing.

@fawkes62 I would love to learn to quilt. I wish I had an interest in it when my grandmother was still alive.

@simone10 I taught myself how to quilt. I didn't really have much interest when I was younger either and the grandma that did most of the quilting lived over an hour away.

My grandma on the other side made quilts out of clothing too. My grandma, whose mother started this one, didn't sew that I know of, which is probably part of the reason this one was never finished.

That is a lot of hard work to do this quilt, I think a binding would look very nice!

I am not a quilter, I think it takes a lot of skill. My mother-in-law made quilts for all her children and grandchildren.

Looks really cool! Not an area in which I have expertise, though.

bless yer heart, i don't envy ya the choices laid forth. somethin' i quarrel with 'round here's well. i'm sure those fabrics're puckerin' coz their bias cut. i tend to turn to fusible webbin' when faced with such so i've a tad more control. the quilt'd be lovely with a half hex border 'r perhaps e'en look't diamond shapes. don't listen to me though coz i'm hex challenged, lol. if'n i cut it straight, i sew such crooked :D ne'er get the same exact size'f nothin'. which's why these days i predominately stick with jest plain ol' squares, lol. can't wait to see what'cha come up with - what a treasure to've!

Hexagon quilt
This is an old post, I finished it in time to give it to my mom for Christmas. I did post a picture of it on another post of mine. I'd include the link, but I'm not sure if that's allowed. I will add the picture here so you don't have to go searching for it.

This would make me crazy. I could not handle the lack of perfection in the seams. Do you do this by hand or machine?

I would use half he use the same as your border. To choose a border, I take the quilt front to the fabric shop and 'audition' different colours and prints till I find one I like.

I am no quilter, but I think I would make a template of the shape needed to do the edges and do it all in a plain coloured fabric. all the way round, so there would be a sort of border

I think that's what it will be doing. It will be a lot easier to do just a single fabric than having to sew them together. Either way it's going to be a pain to sew together. I've never done hexagons before, so there's a lot I don't know about sewing them.
