Wouldn’t it be nice if MyLot let us inset images in the body of our text?

Wouldn’t it be nice if the site allowed us to insert screen shots inside our posts text body? I know that a few discussions I have written would have been so much nicer with a few screen shots added to show people how to do things. I tried writing the text to a word doc and inseting the images on the document. But when you copy and paste this to your text box the images aren’t displayed. You only get a black space where the images should have been. I am starting to understand the platform a little better because of a person on here and how they explained a few things to me. This platform is very different and I am not sure if it can be modified to accept screen shots in the body of our text. If it could be modified would you like this feature? Would it be beneficial to you to be able to take a screen shot and insert it in your text? It could help others understand where to find what you’re talking about. I find that some screen shots inserted in between text can give a person an idea of where to find what you’re talking about. Image - personal image

When I read the title I was inclined to respond that such a feature would be superfluous and unnecessary, but in the case of a tutorial it would make a significant difference. Sadly it is not likely to be endorsed because the feature could easily be abused and result in pages that took a long time to load. You could always submit a text tutorial and provide a link to a more elaborate one, assuming that you have web space to host it.e

@poehere I understand the plagiarism fear, but signing the duplicate with your Mylot username should eliminate that risk.

Yes this is also a good idea but in a tutorial it would be almost word for word and then it would be considered duplicate text on the site. So looks like there is actually no way to do this unless on each message I inset one of the screen shots. I might be able to inset a lot of comments saying steps 1 to what ever and inset an image there but this seems like a lot of time and also space to do this one.

If you were attempting to show a process you could add other pictures inside comments as the thread progresses?

Yes I know this one. I posted it here already to show people how to do this. But a process or steps that show people how to do something sort of need the screen shots before or after them to make them easier to understand.

See, the first and foremost thing to note is that MyLot is not a place to upload Tutorials. Though there are times and exceptions. As such, there does not seem to be a need for having a layout or an editor that allows you to place in text and images. Also note that every single image we upload stays on the server. Definitely that is a big expensive deal for MyLot as they do not delete images. I can still see images on discussions I started years ago.

@thesids i think that's what happened at bubblews. the attraction of the first version of the platform was being able to put lots of pictures, but i think that's also the reason our archives eventually 'were shrank.' before they released the latest version (july 2015) the staff said they were busy 'migrating millions of posts' but once it was working, a lot of comments in old posts were missing. later, even comments in new posts were missing.

Yes I see this one. You are right on this. I was just thinking of it and decided to write it up. I understand the expense of servers and how costly they are to house all this information. I know they have a way to purge some of the older stuff but on a site like this some of the older discussion are still left on the servers and not purged. So I can see adding more images would only use up way too much space and they would need to increase their storage space a lot faster than they are now. This does add a lot of work to the site and a big expense too.

@hereandthere The problem from migrating from one server to another or one platform to another is the fact the people who did it had issues and didn't think of how to do this. I have seen that issues on forum in he past where they want a new one and create it and now it is time to put back all the posts from the old one. Now people get tired, lazy and sick of trying to get them in the right place so they just give up and wow they are gone.

I am not sure how much work it would take to allow that to happen. I think this site is pretty basic and multi-photos adds a new dimension in many ways, including problems. I think 'writing' sites are a little different from this type of site.

Yes you are right and a person explained the platform to me. I think a few basic screen shots that are posted in a body of text would be nice. That is all I am trying to say. I know it means a new dimension and adding images. Even bold is different on the site to add this one.

I have put a screenshot into a discussion or a comment before... Not sure what benefit pasting it directly into the text box would give... I am with @Asylum, use this site as a pointer to your tutorial hosted elsewhere. Perhaps I have misunderstood you original idea?

Inserting a screenshot is easy enough, but we are restricted to one image. What Ann wants to do is insert several, spaced out among the text to demonstrate clearly.

@Asylum Ah, yes, I see the difficulty that poses... That is why I occasionally have to use tools like this one...

@pgntwo That approach would offer limited success. Encapsulating too many images into one would simply make them difficult to see clearly. It is preferable to have them interspersed to keep the flow easier to follow.

I can understand the reasons against it but I'd like to be able to display more than one image.

@AdrienneJenkins This one works on my phone (Android) and on my PC (Windows):
Photo Stitcher combines 2 to 9 photos into one. Simple online tool crops, resizes, and combines up to nine photos into one montage or composite photo. Photos are arranged in a grid pattern.

You can display multiple images as long as you add them to your comments. I did a post on this one a bit back and showed people how they could add more images to their work if they wanted to. But for a paper like I am talking about this isn't a great idea and not practical to post the images inside the comments.
