Some of you might know, I came across myLot because I'm working on a dissertation on the impact of social media.
I was trying to find a good angle to cover that my other class mates might not have thought of before. Social Media platforms that pays it's members to "like, share, post, interact" etc. I figured there's only so much one could harp on about Facebook, Twitter, YouTube...
After a thorough search on the internet and weeding out the obvious scams, I came across myLot, which appears to be the only platform that falls into the above category.
Until I've come across another one today, Sweeba. I wasn't able to find out much about this website. I'm hesitant to add another site onto my research list, if it is going no where (e.g. my experience with the B-site) as I do have a deadline to meet.
So, I'm wondering if anyone else has come across this site before. If so, how's your experience of it so far?
Thanks for sharing!

@Drosophila Have you looked at Tsu? I think it's more of a pyramid scheme and never made a cent there. Apparently, Facebook won't let it be mentioned on the site any more. I think it's because Tsu members were spamming it trying to get members to sign up under them.

When you say dissertation do you mean you are writing a thesis, an article for a web page or doing research to find out where the money is?
edited this comment..Sorry, I remember now for school - cool.
Isn't social media worker someone that works for a company or organization. Companies are interested in the media obviously and willing to pay people high salaries that know how to communicate.
The pay sites are for example someone with a hobby and it helps pay for internet provider usage etc. I remember when 2nd life game was growing. It would reward in lindens that is game money which could be sold for real money. There are always claims of people making large sums money in various places online that come and go but I think the money ends up going to purchase new computers.

@Drosophila Thanks for explaining this. I like the idea of branding versus marketing too. There is so many false claims and misuse of marketing that alternative methods can be justified as a valuable investment to choose from.

Second life, yep I read about that a long while ago. :)
Yep I'm doing a digital marketing course with heavy emphasis on social media.
The goal is hopefully I should finish and become a Social Media Analyst/Strategist.
I don't like generating social media content, I actually hate writing. xD
But, I do like watching the patterns or trends that emerges on the Social Media scene.

@Bluedoll Yep, the one thing that article mentioned is interesting is monitoring the trends and come up with communication plans. That's more my thing versus writing a blog. Tbh Susan has a very "branding" focused traditional marketing spill, which can't be tracked with metrics. I see social media analytics as able to quantify the importance of "branding", therefore has a better justification on why a company should spend $$$ on a program.
Anyhow, defo good chat with you! Thanks for the article and the comments. :)

@boiboing so far I've delved into the "chicken-egg" relationship of social media. It's a case of whether the platform exist because of the community, or the community congregate because of the platfom. Both Facebook & myLot are good case studies. The bit I struggle with is trying to link unique users, site traffic, and monetisation..
Obviously this meant to be an analytical bit of work with stats, figures etc supporting the finding, and not a philosophical debate. Hence I struggle. Also Mylot seems to be one of a kind, so difficult to do a like-like comparison.
Hence I was intrigued about this other site..

It doesn't look that way. However, I also run out of time to investigate after new platforms. So I don't think I'll be going after it. Bubbles would be able to make a good study case for me after all, though with the website closure I'm not sure I'll get more data from it.

I have just joined so it is all very new to me but Im also an ex-Bubblews member and have written for other sites, concurrently also at PersonaPaper.com and ChatAbout as well as a few others. As far as I can see this platform site is so much easier to use. I look forward to your ideas in your dissertation.

There are other sites like chatabout, other positng forums like Postloop and others. I have never heard of Sweba. MyLot is one of the easiest to use, I think, since nearly everyone can do it.

Mylot is an established website re-launched.
I do not know of other social medial site, unless you are talking about writing sites as well.
In this case, you can check out Infobarrel, Hubpages, Expertscolumn and Persona Paper.
Hubpages is one of the oldest and most reputable.

I signed up to check it out but it didn't seem worthwhile. It was just full of the sort of posts that I'm used to seeing on other sites from people who don't have anything to say but decide to post instead about how great it is that they can earn money, hoping that it will earn them likes and follows so they can make money. I didn't see much worthwhile on the site.
