How Do You Know a Good Hotel?

There are many ways to choose the perfect hotel. I am all about amenities and location. Our hotel here in Gettysburg has an indoor pool and spa and included free breakfast, nothing wrong with that.
But the best is that there is a restaurant right across the parking lot and beyond that an outlet mall. We walked out to dinner and then took a stroll through the shops. I bought some books and some scented drawer liners which I have been looking for. Help to walk off my lovely fall harvest dinner salad as well!!
What do you consider important when choosing a hotel?

@BelleStarr most of my travel is in the Summer. I don't do resorts much. Oh, I do like a weight room. There's one at Circus circus in Reno, where I tend to stop for a night on the way to Montana.

A good location is very important for me to choose a hotel. It shall have the public traffic nearby. Especially I hope it can be close to the subway. Since I book the hotel via the net, I will look at the feedbacks from other customers and then I can judge whether this is a good hotel or not.

@BelleStarr I will look at the reviews, too. They are important for me to make a decision.

I think it depends on why I'm there. If it's a conference for instance, a pool isn't going to be necessary. If it's a vacation it certainly is. Free breakfast is always a plus, and of course a comfortable clean room, and if they give me an upper floor if it's a multistory hotel, I would like a nice view.

I am prone to using the hot tub even when I am visiting for a conference.

Country Inn and Suites by Carlson allows pets we just saw tons of them at the hotel in Gettysburg.

We look for a reputable hotel and quite often try to stay in one that has a restaurant in it. I was sick once when we were gone away, and it is amazing how convenient room service can be when you are just too ill to go out in public. We also look for locations away from highways where the traffic will keep us awake or places that offer too much for too little as we have stayed at those in the past and they seem to attract the traveling sports families, who can be very loud and disruptive.

I love to be able to at least walk to a restaurant and I am mostly brand loyal so I like hotels that give me points.

Yes safety is a big issue especially when it is in a city. I admit I love a gorgeous bathroom.

I will compromise on price before location and amenities, I have started really liking Country Inn and Suites by Carlson.

@simone10 They are comfortable without being stuffy and usually reasonably priced with a good breakfast.
