My boss offers to convert me to permanent

I am currently on a six-months contract job. My contract is ending in December, and I have been expecting my boss to tell me about contract renewal. The recruitment agency did mention that this contract job is a renewable contract. Today my boss calls me into his office, and offers to convert me to permanent with effect from January 2016. The salary increment is nominal, but I will get to enjoy slightly better bonus and benefits than my contract term. Without any hesitation, I reject it. I rather stay on as a contract staff, and not permanent staff. I have seen the kind of stress that permanent staff handles, and I do not think I want the same kind of stress. In my role as a contract staff, I do not have to write up policies, standard operating procedure, answer queries from the auditors. If I want to go home on time, I can still go back if my colleagues are not on leave. The permanent staff do not have such luxuries. They often work late into the night for free, and they have to return on weekends for special projects. They get time off but not overtime pay. The extra month of bonus is not enough incentive for me to take on such work stress. I think I will die young in this job as a permanent staff. That is probably the reason that many permanent staff do not last more than two years.

That's interesting that you do not want to be made permanent. Your reasons are very sound. It seems you are doing the right thing.

I think after watching how the permanent staff work, I do not want to be in their shoes. The money is not great either. An extra month of bonus is not enough incentive to take on a stressful job.

@scheng1 A contract is good I think. If your work is good it will be renewed but you always have the option to leave. And from what you've said, contract work is much less stressful.

But as contract staff on a temporary basis, isn't there more possibility of not having any job in a few months?

No, we have full employment for many years, and many of us even hold 2 jobs at certain time in our life. If my contract is not renewed, I can easily find another job. The salary may not be the same, but there is no risk of not getting a job.

That's very interesting that you make enough money as a contractor to make up for not having benefits. Is he definitely going to renew your contract?

I think he will talk to me about it next week. I sure give him a shock when I reject the offer of permanent job. The benefits of a permanent staff are not that great either, just a few days more vacation leave, and a couple of hundred dollars worth of medical and dental benefit.
