TV Celebrity Quiz Shows Are Cruel

There is a growing trend in the UK for celebrity specials of popular daily and weekly quiz shows. While the ordinary competitors win or fail to win big cash prizes for themselves, the celebrities play to raise money for charities (as well as their appearance fees). This is great for the chosen charities if the celebrity does well, but it is horrible to see a contestant fail when it means a hospital or children’s charity isn’t going to gain £10,000 or more because someone didn’t know the capital of Peru. Usually the show’s producer’s make a modest donation to the charities chosen, but it is always a fraction of the money staked on correct answers. In some cases the answer could mean life or death to someone. Sorry son, you can’t have a new kidney because Christopher Biggins got beaten by the clock. It is hideous to watch these shows. I do watch a few quiz shows, mainly Pointless and The Chase. In either case I am quite happy to watch either ordinary contestants or celebrities, although they do have a habit of finding minor celebrities who I have never heard of.

it's mostly as they get little other work that they are cheap to get for such game shows and panto season

There's a generation and a half of armchair voyeurs out there... alas.

Occasionally we'll have a quiz show featuring celebrities and it is sad when they don't win a big amount of money for their charity
