The Advantages of Talking About the Weather

It seems like a mundane topic, yet it's a very popular and successful conversation starter. If you can't think of anything to say to someone, you can always talk about the weather. Standing in line at the local grocery, you have something elemental in common with the person next to you. You've both just survived the same heat wave or thunderstorm. The weather has a significant effect on each of our lives. In every online chat I've participated in, the weather is a popular topic. When you're talking to people who are far away from you, it's interesting to hear about their weather. It gives you a little glimpse into their lives. Hearing about it from someone you know who is experiencing it is fundamentally different from hearing a weather report. Unless there are flash floods or hailstones the size of golf balls, the conversation will probably move on quickly, but the weather can be a nice icebreaker. It has been a rainy day, and now it is a cool, clear evening here in northern California. How about where you live?

Weather report - French Polynesia Tahiti - Today was sunny, a few clouds in the sky, the lagoon was clam and warm. A perfect day to take Dakota to the beach and get his little furry paws went and full of sand. He is a good source of entertainment when he is wet because he sort of looks like a drowned rat.

Wow! That sounds heavenly, and Dakota is your soggy, sandy little angel.

@norcal Yes he is. I could of taken both dogs but the big one demands a lot of space to run and play. Too many people were out and enjoying a relaxing day so it was only the little guy who went with me this time.

I always fall back on the weather if I get a bit stuck for a conversation opener. As you say, from there it is relatively easy to move on to something else.
