Band Banquet

Last night we went to the annual band banquet. It's an end of the year celebration for all the Marching Band kids. They get their awards, seniors say speeches. Dinner is served, there's some dancing, prizes, a slideshow, and of course socialization. It was kind of fun. I think this year was more fun for me than last year because I know more people now. Last year was my first year and I barely knew anyone. What I didn't like was the amount of complaining. The table I sat at was one of the last served. It's served buffet style, you grab a plate and go down the line of food and take what you want. When we got up there most of the food was gone. They were in the process of replacing it, but we had to wait for some of it. Then the food wasn't even that good once we were able to eat it. Some of it was, the beef was great. The potatoes were not seasoned, the beans tasted like butter. Others said their beans were cold and undercooked. Some said their chicken was under cooked, I did not eat any chicken. The pasta was dry. So then everyone started complaining about the cost of the banquet vs. the quality of the food. It wasn't worth what we had to pay to get in. The band boosters pay for all the band members, but any parents or family that wants to attend has to pay for themselves, and it isn't cheap. $21 for adults, $12.50 for kids. So that complaining turned into general complaining about the band boosters as it was there decision to choose this location, and they've used this location repeatedly, at least last year and I'm not sure about before that, but I remember last year the food was definitely better than this year. But the complaints weren't just about the venue, but also about the cost. The boosters cancelled a trip this year due to finances and people were wondering why the trip had to be cancelled while they can still shell out all this money for a fancy banquet... and it just kept going on from there. Suggestions on where to do the banquet, suggestions on where to take the trip... ugh! I had been debating running for a position on the booster's executive board, but now I'm thinking I might not do that. Some of these band parents are down right vicious, and over the silliest things too! Despite the complaining I still had fun, and so did the kids. Next year I might bring my younger kids too, and maybe hubby. That's part of why I've already started saving up for next Marching Band season, so we don't have to miss out on fun things due to limited finances.

Its been so long since my kids were in school I had actually forgotten all that crap and complaining that goes on at every meeting. I don't miss it at all but I'm glad to see you saving for the next family event. Its important to the kids to be there and I think you should run for the executive board!.

Part of me would like to.. but I feel like I don't really have the time to commit to it right now between work and the kids schedules. I've got a couple younger kids that will probably go through band as well so I've got time to change my mind. It's only my 2nd year being involved right now. I do the website for them for free, so I contribute my share.

@PainsOnSlate If I were still staying at home, or even just working part-time I'd probably get involved.

@katsmeow1213 Only you know your limitations. When I was younger I found it hard to find time too so I completely understand.

It's a shame people can't just stop moaning at an event that's supposed to be a celebration.

That's what I thought too, but certain people will complain no matter what.

I think if you could find a large enough venue it should be a pot luck. That would get complaints as well. You are setting a good example of how to be an adult. That is great.

I don't know.. The parents really have to give a ton during band season as it is. I think it's nice to just have a nice dinner out with our friends at the end of the season and not have to work for it except for the cost. I understand it's a hardship on lower income families, but that's why you plan ahead.

You always need to make the best of a bad situation or try to at least.

It gets depressing when everyone complains doesn't it, even if there is cause. I'mglad that you still managed to enjoy it.

I think it was nice to have an evening out and not have to work for it, as most of the time we are working hard for band things.

I'm sorry you had to deal with people complaining last night and it wasn't that much fun. I hate going somewhere and the food is not good. Always next year and hopefully it will be a better turn out

I don't remember last year being as bad, I thought the food was good. I think perhaps the place was short staffed, it seemed all those who were working were running around like crazy, like they just weren't prepared.

some people are not happy unless they find something to complain about sadly - it can spoil so many events

Yep, I try to avoid those people mostly... but as they like to voice their complaints to anyone who will listen, it's hard to avoid them all together.

At least you had a good time and were able to talk with others.
