Girls being married off at 8 and 10

Girl child issues have a long way to go before they can all be solved. It is hard to believe that at this age a parent can marry off her daughter at age of 8 or 10 to a man old enough to be her grandfather. This happens in the north eastern part of our country where we have pastoralist communities. Women say here does not matter and they would not even raise a hand when it happens. Some strides have been made but much more needs to be done. I look forward when these girls will be free at last

This is a very sad state of affairs. I hope things change for the better soon although I guess that's a bit much to hope for.

Often the problem is that the mothers and grandmothers are victims of the same and seem unwilling to make a change in their community.

I think that is way too young :( Being forced to get married at any age is wrong.

Exactly! We helped two young Pakistani women who ran away from their home as they did not want to be married off to some strange man from their parent's village.

People of the country need to stand as one and must move the govt to stop such cases where such orthodox nonsense takes place!! It was happening to a great extent in India too, but the increment of awareness has decreased it to great bit!! Still I dont say we are free of it, but we are making a move towards it!!

yes this kind of thing happened in india-africa more.we have rules that you cant marry girl till she become 18 but in some village where no education they dont know there it happened and someone marry to 4 to 5 girls and 3 or 4 child to every wife. i still not understand why girl ready to marry them and may be they learn to girl only to become wife and take responsibilities of home.

It is hard for me to imagine such little girls get married. How such little girl has a baby and takes care for a family? It is good enough for her to take care of herself at this age. When I was 8 years old, I didn't know anything. And actually I just studied as a grade 2 pupil. Here the legal marriage age for girls is about 20 or 21. I am not so sure for it. I got married when I was 28.

And to make matters worse they are married as second, third and so forth wives. The legal age here is 18 and so the government is trying to eradicate such customs

As a mum you can imagine how the women in those areas feel when they see their daughters being subjected to such things and they cannot utter a word

oh mine. but here i see people marry their girl child of 20 to 50-70 years old man. It's simply unacceptable. Don't you think , they all should be stopped.

At 20 it is alittle better but then they should be allowed to make their own choice after all it is them to be in that marriage and not the parents
