Resolving Computer Problems

Boy, oh, boy! I am not happy with my computers right now. I called upon a tech neighbour for help but he didn't get back to me until last night. I told him what I was in the process of doing and he agreed that I was doing the right thing. I removed Google Chrome from my current laptop, my old laptop and my desktop. I did malwarebytes scans on all three... sort of. I did it on my current laptop, no problem. My old laptop would not allow me access to malwarebytes. The desktop allowed me access and I did a scan, except it couldn't quarantine the 681 threats. Ggrrr. I told my neighbour about the old laptop but the desktop hadn't finished scanning when I spoke to him. He said to call him this morning. Uh, he's not home. The old laptop he told me to shut down. So I can't use it to watch live stream while I work on my current laptop. I can't reinstall chrome until all issues are fixed. So I'm using this stupid internet explorer and it's driving me crazy. I want my Google Chrome back! I sure hope I can get this all fixed by the end of the day.

Boot the old laptop in Safe Mode, then run Malwarebytes. I'm guessing the reason you're unable to access it is probably because there's a virus that won't allow it to run. That's a pretty common issue. If I remember correctly, Malwarebytes might cache the quarantine list and deal with the problems when the computer is rebooted. Try that with the desktop, and if it doesn't take care of it automatically boot it in Safe Mode and run another scan. If you're not running virus protection currently, I'd suggest downloading at least the free edition of AVG from download.com. That's the one I use, and it's been effective at protecting my systems from threats.

I have free virus protection from my internet provider. How do I boot in safe mode? My neighbour suggesting downloading the program to a flash drive and transferring it to the other computer that way but I told him I didn't know how to do that. I wish he would show up and fix this mess.

@patgalca You can usually do it when booting the computer by pressing F8 before the Windows logo appears.

@yukimori If I don't hear from my neighbour by 8:00 tonight I will give that a try. Thanks.

If all else fails. I would consider a fresh installation of Windows. But after you uninstall Chrome and its components, check the list for things you don't recognize. Whatever you decide to uninstall, download a free program called CCleaner. It will wipe up any of the mess left after you uninstall programs and it also checks for viruses and malware.

I have CCleaner on this laptop but when I went to use it (a couple of days ago), something made me hesitate. All is well now though. My neighbour fixed all but the old laptop, which is probably just, well, old.

The listing of 681 threats sounds extremely suspicious to me. It is rather an excessive number to appear and Malwarebytes cannot be unable to deal with at least the majority of those. There is a common deception used by many programs or web scans that involves listing an inordinate number of threats to persuade someone to buy a program. Since Malwarebytes have a free program then it is not likely to be the reason, so I would be interested to know where you acquired the program from. If you have downloaded the program from any site other than the Malwarebytes official site, then I would suggest downloading a new copy from their website.

Wow this post reminds me of my old computer help desk days. I picture you stuck in a revolving door with a laptop. Help! As the door swings around. Help! There you are on internet explorer. Help! Saying what do I do now? Help! Press next we say. Help you say.

I am using Internet Explorer and I don't mind it at all.
