An amusing Google Easter Egg

For the benefit of those who may not be accustomed to the term, an Easter Egg is a hidden piece of code in software that produces unexpected or amusing results. I was talking to a friend yesterday about some of the amusing ones from the old days, such as typing Volcano into a Windows 98 screensaver, which generated a list of North American volcanoes. With the subject in mind this morning, I decided to disclose an unusual one about Google. There are many oddments in Google, but this one is rather amusing to me. Open up Google and type into the search bar Do a barrel roll Google will gladly oblige and the page will roll clockwise 360 degrees. This is not a very useful feature, but will amuse some.

Yes, it is a rather silly little thing but I thought that it might amuse a few people

I have seen that one before, and there is some other one that I can't remember right now. I think programmers like to have a little fun now and then.

There are vast numbers hidden in various programs, although the older versions of software tended to have the best ones. There was even a Spy Racing Game hidden in Microsoft Excel 2000.

Yes, I do know that one and those greedy little circles eat all the results before grouping together to display GG.

It serves no real purpose, but can be amusing.

I remember a famous Apple II Easter Egg. If you inserted the floppy disk of the game Karateka upside down, though, the game played upside down.

I never used Apple so did not get to know any of the Easter Eggs in that operating system or related software. However, I have known lots in Windows and Windows related software programs. Many years ago I even created a website portraying many of the decent ones, although that website probably drifted into oblivion many moons ago.

@LadyDuck There are still plenty around these days, but rarely tend to be as inventive as the old ones where. I do believe that space invaders is still available in Open Office.

@Asylum I remember that I wrote an article for a French magazine with a list of Easter eggs, I surely have a copy, but I do not know where.

Very cute. I love silly little pranks like this one. I like big ones too, as long as they make someone smile and hurt no one. The night before April 1st one year, the principal gave me a pass key to all of the classrooms on campus, and twenty students and I turned around every student and teacher desk in the school. The next morning was a laugh fest.

The best April Fools stunt that I ever came across was many years ago when the BBC ran a short documentary on the Spaghetti trees in Switzerland. This was way back in the late 1950s when very little was commonly known here about spaghetti.

@ElizabethWallace The majority of British people would have been fooled back in those days due to spaghetti being quite uncommon. I saw the original documentary and have watched a video of it since. The sight of someone collecting the crops from the trees was extremely well done and convincing.

@Asylum I bet that was fun for those who were not naive, but embarrassing for those so easily fooled.

It is certainly a rather odd feature to add, but as you say it is amusing.

I expect that many people will have to try it for curiosity. A rather strange feature to include in the system, but quite amusing.
