Cougar Sighting in my Neighborhood

We have been told to keep a good eye on our pets and children in the area because a cougar is in the area. There was one last year in this area also that was shot and killed by some homeowners but since these animals are a protected species the men were each fined $1,000. I'm sorry but if a cougar went after one of my dogs or a child I would shoot it protected species or not. We are told if we come upon a cougar to face it and raise your arms to make you seem larger than it and say something loud and firmly, do not run or lay on the ground. But of course a young child or dog or cat would not be able to raise their arms and a child would probably start screaming. This is a scary situation for everyone in this area.

Sorry for inserting a joke but I didnt expect this topic to be about a literal cougar. I thought this topic is about Madonna or Jennifer Lopez. The dog breed Dogo Argentino were bred to kill Cougars. You may consider having a dog of that breed.

Thanks for the suggestion but I already have two dogs one would fight a cougar and the other would alert us to it being in or near our home by barking.

@Marcyaz I am a cat person but we all know that dogs can always beat cats. You can try to have the dogs trained to defend your family from those mountain lions.

It is very scary, I hope everyone stays safe. I don't think they should be shot though. I understand if it's attacking your pet or child.. I can't imagine what I would do in that situation... probably just move away to an area where there are no cougars. But these are magnificent animals and it's not their fault their land is being encroached upon by humans. They need places where they can be safe, with plenty of animals to hunt and eat.

The authorities are trying to find them to take them somewhere else but if they try to attack a pet or a child that is when a homeowner will protect their pet or child. This is not cougar land so there will be no moving as we just moved here last year.

@Marcyaz Well you said this is the 2nd cougar sighting this town has had. I would guess that cougar land is very close, and the cougars cannot find enough to eat so they're coming to towns and cities to find food. It doesn't seem like a safe place for humans to live.

I do hope it does not come your way. All that advise makes me laugh. I would panic especially if it was near my kids or pets.

That is indeed a tall order pun meant. But yes. How could children handle the situation. You would perhaps be ready to pay the fine. I wonder why they get into human territory. Bad for both.

I would gladly pay a fine for something like this. They come here from other States maybe to find food and water and since we have a lot of deer I would think that is what they are really after.

You are fight, an adult can raise his arms and try to scare the cougar, but not a child. It's scary.

It is scary to think you can't let the kids or animals out without keeping a good eye on them in their own yard and what is particulary scary is most homes around here do not have fenced in yards.

That is a scary situation, and of course you'd want to kill it if it was threatening you or your animals and children.

We do have cougars in Alberta. Suburbs of Calgary are spreading into their territory and cougars have been seen in Calgary. Mostly they are in the mountains and the bush in Alberta, but people keep building on their areas.

I is being said that there are a lot of deer in that area and the cougar want to kill and eat the deer but will come across humans if the deer run down the streets.
