This made me giggle this morning ... 'With regard to the week in which the normal 47 hours were compressed into five days, Mr T G Rose said the chief difficulty was fatigue. If the day started at 8 o'clock, workers were late in getting home, and after cleaning up and having tea, there was little of the evening left. There was however the compensation of Saturday off.' It's from the news in 1935. These days we all seem to grumble about working about 37 hours, spread over five days {exceptions exist, obviously}, conveniently forgetting that our grandparents and great-grandparents really did work longer hours and have less free time. Not to mention, the lack of a National Health Service and a benefits system. However, even though I do feel blessed to live in a society where I'm not expected to work a six day week, I do wonder if they actually had it better. It must have been calmer, less stressful, no overloading of information due to constant news and technology. It sounds a little bit like heaven. Or not.

All the things that are supposed to make life easier - mobile phones, computers etc - just seem to eat into our time.

They do ... it's ridiculous. Maybe it's a government ploy to turn us all into mindless machines with no concept of time.

But in those days, they really did have Sunday as a day of rest because no businesses were open, etc. We worked 40 hours in my last job, it started as 37.5, but they decided to stretch it to 40 effectively making us work longer hours with no raise meaning our pay actually went down.

Sunday's should still be a day of rest. Employers are fickle characters who laden us with guilt.

I worked 42 hours a week when I was young, in the seventies.
