Past Thanksgivings

I sure miss having Thanksgiving. Latvians in the U.S. of course celebrate but Latvian in Latvia do not celebrate this wonderful holiday. For those of you who will be celebrating I wish you all of the best and a great big Thanksgiving feast. Some of you might be wondering why I couldn’t make my own Thanksgiving at home. Well the answer to that is that the turkeys here are dry and hard and so no turkey and that of course is the main thing for the feast. Someone told me today that a new store has opened up in Riga selling only turkeys and turkey meat. Perhaps I will look into that otherwise I am going without a Thanksgiving meal. If I ever manage to get back to the states I will be ready to make a Thanksgiving feast that will last for two days at least if not more. The apartment building in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, New York where my mom and I used to live had a large Latvian population. It was like a small Latvian community and I soon discovered that these retired people could celebrate even better than I could. They embraced all of the usual holidays including Valentine’s. When it came to Thanksgiving we rotated from apartment to apartment each year so that only one person didn’t have to make the feast. I really enjoyed making Thanksgiving for them all. In the picture you can see us having one of our celebrations at 267 Ovington Avenue. Those sure were fun days.

That's so neat you all shared Thanksgiving like that while you were in Brooklyn :) I enjoyed seeing the photo you shared. It's a shame you can't enjoy a similar feast where you are now, but it really is just the idea of sharing a good meal with people you care about, and giving thanks for what you have :) No turkey required!

Thanksgiving is nice. And there's enough food to last for days. It's nice seeing people and calling friends and family. Glad you have good memories. Hope you can make some more.

We don't celebrate in the UK but it does look fun in your photo. What lovely memories.

@Missmwngi I am determined to find a way to have a chance to celebrate. If lucky perhaps next year.

Thanksgiving isn't celebrated in Australia although I guess Americans living here would celebrate it.
