Computer working to hard?

Some time ago, I noted a lot of noise, like, a lot of air passing through or something ([the fan?]for lack of a better explanation) coming from my computer tower when I played games I had downloaded on my computer. Once I was done with the game and logged off it, the noise would subside.
Today I'm hearing those "labored" noises from my computer a lot, and I'm not always playing a downloaded game.
I looked, and there's nothing covering up the little vent holes on the side of the tower. I haven't had the chance to look at the back of the tower yet.
Has anyone out there noticed their computer doing this kind of thing? Did you/were you able to do anything about it?

I think @poehere posted a discussion about opening up the back and giving it a good clean out. Barring that I would get a can of compressed air and blow through all the vents.

Thank you Garden Gerty for bringing this to my attention. I have given her a few ways she can fix this or things she can look at to fix it.

You sound like you might have 2 issues on this one. One - your processor fan is caked with dust and dirt and it is over heating your process. Two you could have a problem with your power supply and needing to replace this one. They do go out you know. Or Three this can actually be a hard drive problem where the spindle and head are having problem. The grinding noise you hear can actually be from the head seeking to find the data and it is not finiding it because of some bad sectors. This can cause a lot of rewrites on your hard drive as the bad sectors are marked so they aren't use again.
Do a search on my name and look for a post about something like this - Did you know your computer needs maid service. I think this is what I called it. You will know you have the right one when you see a mother board, processor fan caked in dirt and dust.
