If You Plan to Get Old

If you plan to get old, I hope you have socked away plenty of money to put you up in a fancy old-age home like my mother-in-law did. She’s in one of those extended care places where you go to an apartment when you are still pretty-much able to care for yourself, and as you deteriorate they take care of you until you die. He third husband, whom she married when they were both in their 80s, died of a stroke a couple of years ago. With her health declining, she decided it was time to move out of her home and go where there were people to take care of her. Between her pension from being a teacher, and the money her husbands have left her, she will never need anything from us, and that’s the way she wants it. She lives on the other side of the country, so we rarely see her. My mom is a different story. She became a widow at the age of 27, and never remarried. She never saved any money. She is completely dependent on Social Security. She lives in a cottage on our property, and I will take care of her until she dies, or goes to a nursing home. Do you think you have save enough for your old age?

I should have been smarter when I was younger and selected ex-husbands like she did.

Well, she only had 1 ex, the other 2 are "late" husbands. She did well at picking them though.

That was so smart of your mother-in-law . And she is lucky that her husband left some money she can live on aside from her pension . As to your mother , well at least you are still there to take care of her . God must be so proud of you my dear , and so is your mother of course .

You are never too young to start saving for retirement.

That's true. The younger you start, the better off you will be.

I think it's always hard. It is amazing how, when your income goes down, you can still manage to live. At least that's been my experience. Then it makes me think of all the money I could have saved.

We've done our best to be organised but sometimes world events and stock markets impact on your savings in spite of your best efforts. We won't be relying on our kids as they are battling a bit as it is. We should be okay and we're enjoying life at the moment with our holidays and such.

Yeah, I could have done better myself. At this stage, there's only so much we can do. You are right, the here and now is pretty good, we might as well enjoy it.
