Is a ring necessary on Engagement?

Are they a necessary token of your marriage-to-be? Is it a symbol of Love for you? For me, it is not a symbol of love it's more a symbol of commitment and the engagement itself. I wouldn't need a ring to know whether or not someone loved me- but it would be nice to have engagement rings. No need for anything super expensive, just something we both think looks nice. Is it important to you to have engagement ring?

An engagement ring nowadays is more than just a symbol!! For few people, engagement rings are a way of showing off too!! For me, I agree with you, nothing super expensive!! Something that is pretty is enough!! I am going to my friend's engagement ceremony on 2nd of December, and I know it will be less celebrating, more showing off to the world that they have lot of money!!

Yeah, nowadays most are just a show-off how expensive it is that they can afford the expensive engagement ring with a big diamond on it. With ou without engagement as long as we love each other Im ok with it.

I don't think it's necessary, but I would prefer a ring. Now a days if we announce an engagement, people will automatically ask, where's the ring - I want to see the one was gifted to you!

@hlfbldmom Yes, but I don't mind the price - as long as it symbolizes love and commitment.

Its because it has been a tradition that an engagement must have a ring to serve as a bond and a commitment.

Since we didn't have an engagement, so we don't have the rings for it. My husband bought me a diamond ring as the wedding ring. In fact I just wore it in my wedding day and I seldom will put it on. I don't like wearing jewlry. I don't even wear necklace even if I have them.

I honestly don't think it's necessary either. Yes, my husband gave me one when he proposed, and I still wear it, but it wouldn't have been necessary. I think it depends on the couple. It's up to the couple to chose whether it's important to have one or not.

I think it is important to have an engagement ring because of what it symbolizes. For me If I ever receive one it will mean the world to me. It will mean that I'm very precious to my boyfriend. Of course the feeling is what really matters and the ring is only a symbol of that love. So for me it is important ^_^

I think engagement rings are nice, but they aren't a necessity. I bought a ring for my partner (it's silver with lab-grown sapphires, and designed around Doctor Who's Tardis). He'll wear it as an engagement ring eventually! But I really don't mind if he doesn't get one for me. I know he loves me, and I know he wants to marry me. I don't need a lump of shiny stuff to prove or show it!

I agree with you, it is a symbol of commitment. When you are using an engagement ring, you tell others that you are with someone already, you are not available anymore. If you won't your engagement ring while you are engaged, your commitment is questionable.
