You’ll Never Drink Chocolate Milk Again

At my workplace there was a temporary employee that came to work there. I asked him where he had worked in the past as a temp. “I worked where they made chocolate milk,” he said. “If you knew how they made chocolate milk, you’d never drink it again.” “What do you mean?” I asked. He told me that they went out to all the stores and picked up the milk that had passed the sale date. Then they brought it back, heated it up and added chocolate syrup to it then sent it out to stores to be sold. I didn’t ask, but I think what upset the guy was the milk was beyond the sales date. There was nothing upsetting to me about that. First of all, drinking sour (old) milk won’t hurt you. It may taste terrible, but it won’t hurt you. Do you like cottage cheese? Guess what. Cottage cheese is made from sour milk. Sour milk is strained and what is left is curds. These curds are rinsed and you have cottage cheese. Do you like sour cream? They wouldn’t call it sour if it wasn’t sour. How about cheese? It comes from milk. But cheese is no good unless it’s aged. And everyone’s favorite–yogurt. You know that can’t be made from fresh milk. And it isn’t. Milk beyond its sales date isn’t going to hurt you so go ahead and enjoy your chocolate milk. It certainly not going to stop me from drinking chocolate milk.

It doesn't come from brown cows? We don't buy chocolate milk anyway - I don't know about the sour milk, but I sure have issues about all that sugar in it. But once and a while we will have some hot chocolate - with milk that's not past the expiration date!

@RichardMeister And how do you explain strawberry milk? I didn't even realize chocolate milk was cheaper. I've also read that "they" are trying to make people have health problems. Apparently dairy is not really good for any of us (we need the calcium - but we don't need the cow's milk itself). I always wondered what is done with all that food that is not bought - it would make sense for someone to do something with "old" milk and make all the money that they can.

@RichardMeister I know - a lot of us drank milk all our lives! Interestingly though a lot of kids these days are allergic to dairy (and nuts) - I'm not sure why. How do we know if these cows were grassfed? I see it on meats labels but I haven't seen that on milk labels (I think). I wish there were only truthful medical reports - a lot of them do have a big slant with $ motives for certain industries in mind - that's just sick. We don't know what to believe. I won't tough margarine - I've heard it's one atom away from being plastic! Real butter only! I think strawberry flavoring is artificial - not to mention the red/pink coloring as well.

No, it comes from those black and white cows. Once the black milk mixes with the white milk you have chocolate milk! I do too. I haven't bought chocolate milk from the store in years. If I want chocolate milk I usually mix it up at home. I can remember someone asking why chocolate milk was cheaper than regular milk. Some one said it had something to do with having us buy it so we would have more health problems. I think it probably has more to do with the fact that it's made from old milk.

I kinda don't think he is telling the truth..wouldn't that be a lot of work for them to go out and get past the date milk..i'm sure it is just at the same place as the regular milk and one section in the place is regular, one is non fat, one is chocolate..and so on..just seems a bit fishy to me..all companies wouldn't have them add chocolate syrup..it would be coming from a huge container..sounds like he was pulling a fast one on you

@Rosekitty It doesn't bother me either. That homemade cottage cheese we made when I was growing up was delicious.

It's probably more like what they do with bread. When the truck brings new bread they pickup the old then take it to the bread store. People who buy the bread at the bread store knows they have to use it right away or freeze. If it gets too far gone it is given to people who have animals that will eat it. So when the truck brings the new milk they will pickup the old and take it to be turned into chocolate milk or cottage cheese. (I know cottage cheese is made from sour milk because I was raised on a dairy farm and we occasionally made cottage cheese.)

As you say, sour milk isn't harmful, so there shouldn't be a problem. Anyway, being past it's sell by date doesn't mean it was sour.

This is true, but I think the guy that told me that thought it must be.

I don't think this upset me at all because I am allergic to milk so I don't drink it at all. My grandma would use sour milk to make a chocolate cake. Man that was the best cake you ever ate. So guess there isn't too much wrong with what they are doing.

That must be why it is always so darned thick. I never like it bought in the store because of the thickness.

Sorry, but yuck. Actually, the only chocolate milk drinker in the house was on a dairy free diet for a while so started using the chocolate almond milk. She still does even though she's not still on the diet. She likes it better than real milk.
