Why Christmas Music is Annoying

'Tis the season for Christmas music, fa la la la la. I have a theory as to why people balk at Christmas music. There are two reasons, in my opinion. First, of course, is that they start playing the stuff before the strains of "Monster Mash" have faded out on Halloween. That's two months of being subjected to "Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer." But there's another problem. I was at my aunt's house yesterday. She stuck a Christmas CD in the player while we were decorating. Sure enough, it was pretty much the same old songs: "White Christmas," "Silver Bells," "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," and "Silent Night." We get 10-20 new Christmas CDs released every year, but the problem is they're loaded with the same old songs. So, in the end (at least to me), it's not so much that it's two months of Christmas music, but that it's two months of the same 18 songs. The last "new big hit" Christmas song we had was probably "Mary Did You Know," and even that has been recorded a hundred times. So, music groups and singers and bands, if you're going to record Christmas albums, could you at least give us some NEW songs for the holidays?

I worked in a record store when I was at school. I was happy to finally see Phil Spector locked up a few years back. Shame he wasn't locked up a few decades earlier to save us all from I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus.

Good god! this reminds me of working in a high street entertainment retailer one xmas. We had "return of the king" on the loop, by the end of my contract, I could recognise every scene when an orc was killed just from the background sound". Oh and that god awful pan-pipe theme tune was driving me up the walls.

I can't blame Phil Spector for "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus." It was written by a British songwriter (Tommie Connor) and recorded by a 12-year-old kid (Little Jimmy Boyd). If you're going to blame anyone, blame the Boston archdiocese: they originally banned the song for being "immoral" (this was 1952, remember ) then lifted the ban, subjecting us all to the torment of the original and subsequent covers (although the Homer & Jethro parody is marvelous -- and also was banned ). I'd rather think Spector could be condemned to a musical prison for what he did to "The Long and Winding Road."

@FourWalls I can assure you that the song was on the album and I doubt that LIttle Jimmy was as screechy as the Ronnettes.

Well said @fourwalls Personally I'd rather have root canal work done than hear anymore Christmas music.

When I was a kid my mother had Christmas music going all day long. We did get tired of hearing.

I believe that Christmas music should only be played one week before the big day.

I only like it when I want to hear it - I can't be forced into listening to it.

I don't mind some Christmas song but they do sometimes play them a bit early.

Tbh I quite like Rat Pack's Xmas cover. But I do hate "the band-aid" cover of "let them know it's xmas time".
