The attached slideshow is of some of the general attractions of Freiburg, Germany. Perhaps most interesting are the Bächle, small water-filled gutters which run throughout the centre of the town. It is said if you accidently step in one, you'll marry someone from the town. These were first documented in the 13th century and were once used to water livestock and for fighting fires but never for sewerage. They helped extinguish fires caused by the bombing by the RAF which I mentioned in a previous post. They mostly run along the sides of the streets and, as cars are banned from the centre of the city, the drains are not an inconvenience. We watched a lot of small children sailing paper boats or otherwise playing in the water. One of the central squares is the Augustinerplatz which was once an Augustinian monastery. It is now a popular social gathering place. There were two weddings taking place in the square while we were there. At the centre of the old city is the Münsterplatz or Cathedral Square where markets are held most days. On the south side is the Merchants' Hall with its façade decorated with the coat of arms and statues of four Hapsburg emperors. We climbed to a vantage point one day (actually I took the cable car) and found grape vines growing on incredibly steep slopes which had been terraced. We also came across a free concert in a little park. And instead of a duck and ducklings crossing the road, we have an adult and her tiny charges. They were off for an outing near our caravan park.

You made it sound like a nice place to visit. We lived in Germany for five years when my dad was in the service. Germany is a beautiful country.

We enjoyed Germany. We didn't find the Germans quite as outgoing as the French but they weren't unfriendly. The different cultures were interesting.

I had a photo of two boys sailing little boats down the gutters but it showed their faces so I left it out.

I saw your slide show and enjoyed watching every photo. But how about adding music to your video to add some more excitement while watching. Hope you don't mind my unsolicited advice.

That's very kind of you to suggest adding music. I never know what music to try and I'd be wanting it to end exactly as the photos end which is a bit difficult I think. But I will try to add music to the next one. Thanks again!

I was finding the constant walking a bit of a strain so it didn't take much for me to decide I'd have a ride in the cable car.

@JudyEv I would enjoy it just for the thrill of the ride as much as a convenient short cut

@arthurchappell We had a much more exciting cable car ride in Salzburg. And I lied! The Freiburg one was actually a rack and pinion type rather than a true cable car. But it saved my feet just the same.

Another great slideshow.... the black forest area of germany was one of my favourites.... we have those irrigation ditches in spain..., but most of the ones in the town centre have been covered up....but water still flows through them .... as a lot of them are connected to the ones that flow Through peoples gardens and orchards etc, and they still use THEM as the main method of irrigation....

Apparently there was talk of covering them and parts of them are so prams, wheelchairs etc can get across. They're fed from the nearby river apparently.

After coming from France, there seemed a lot more graffiti but we only took photos of the good stuff.
