I blame System Restore for this

My Sony Bravia television has internet access, so I have connected it to my home network. This enables me to access my desktop computer or laptop directly from the television itself. This has proven quite useful because I can use the remote to open folders on my computer and select music or video files to play as easily as changing channels. When I tried to play a video this morning the television could not see the computer. I checked all the settings and even rescanned from the television, but this made no difference. Finally I decided to try sending the video from the computer instead, which was when I noticed the problem. My computer could see the television, but Media Streaming was not enabled. I enabled this some 5 months ago, so the only explanation has to be that it has reset to default. A few days ago I ran System Restore to turn the system back 1 day, which I believe may have reset the defaults for Network settings. At least I know about this odd behaviour for future reference.

Ugggh. Now that's frustrating. TVs these days are so amazing but they don't break down like old tube TVs so mine doesn't have such a fancy possibility. Hope you got it fixed by now.

It was very easily rectified as soon I deduced the source of the problem.

@AdrienneJenkins The technology behind the connection is fairly basic, so it is no great achievement to reconnect the two.

Your post only made me realise how dumb I am (only as technology goes: I have other talents). It left me down untilI read the answer given by ForeverTheGrinch .

Understanding the technology does not necessarily make such incidents any easier to trace. I know how the network operates between my computers and television and also how System Restore operates, but that understanding simply tells me that this could not happen.

@marguicha I get emails and telephone calls from friends and ex work colleagues often when they have computer issues. Each person has their own interest whether it is computers, cars or gardening, so asking someone who has the appropriate interest is logical.

@Asylum I guess the difference is that in such situations, my reactions are to go and get a hammer and pound the gadget to pieces or say allthe bad words in my vocabulary or sit down and cry. Fortunatly I donĀ“t make up my mind quickly enough and plan B is to call one of my grandchildren barely out of the cradle.

I don't have a Smart TV and until a couple of months ago, had only a CRT TV. I wouldn't mind accessing my computer from the television, though. Sounds convenient

Like most conveniences, it is something we can easily live without until we have become accustomed to it.

I am well aware by now how expert computers can be at throwing spanners at us.

The important is to find where the problem came from, so we are ready for the next time, because we know there will be a next time.

I fully agree Anna and System Restore is the only possible culprit in my opinion. At the worst I will know to check the Media Streaming settings for any future repetition. System Restore can be a very strange creature at times and does behave oddly. When ever I run this program it always restores the Avast desktop shortcut, despite the fact that it was deleted months prior to the restore point being created.

@Asylum I know Barry, the system restore always does some weird things.

@LadyDuck Since System Restore is basically a backup of registry, you would expect it to revert the operating system and installed programs to the exact condition as they were at the restore point creation.

I thought these were supposed to be 'smart' TVs. I'm glad you figured everything out for future use.

The television was not to blame, the computer was refusing to allow access.
